The harlem is… Music, Theater and Dance exhibit preserves, celebrates and documents the rich cultural history of Harlem. The permanent installation at the historic Harlem Hospital Center, honors over 100 legacy keepers and institutions in a unique salute to the healing power of art and the creative people who have built and are sustaining Harlem’s cultural legacy. The exhibition features large scale photos, video, audio clips, archival images, text and student reflections and a 100 year historical timeline, each illuminating Harlem’s artistic character and blossoming. harlem is…
Tours and Workshops
Experience our free dynamic interactive tours and workshops that bring alive the vibrant living history of this iconic community. We work with your group to design a unique experience that suits the needs of each school or youth, senior or community group. You can also consider adding on special guest appearances, art activities and even a walking tour of the community, all led by our dynamic artist/educator.
Tour Duration: 60-90 minutes Admission: Free
Hours: Tuesdays, 10 am to 2 pm; Thursdays and Saturdays, 12 pm to 4 pm.

Saturdays @ harlem is… Family and Community Programming
This daytime series (12pm-4pm) is designed as an open house for community and families to experience together a full day of simultaneous arts events and programming. Live performances and hands-on workshops will be regular staples, as well as guided exhibition tours conducted by local Harlem legends, scholars, artists, and educators, and it’s free!
harlem is… Public Event Series
This series features a dynamic annual calendar of music, theater, dance, poetry slams, film screenings, and community dialogues, showcasing Harlem’s finest educators, luminaries, and special guests. Provoking thoughtful and inspiring conversations, these free gatherings welcome families and community groups to celebrate Harlem’s vibrant culture together in the expansive Herbert Cove Auditorium or our beautiful Mural Pavilion, home of the WPA Murals.
harlem is… On the Move
We can bring the harlem is…series to you! This series brings interactive, multimedia workshops to your school or community space, celebrating Harlem’s iconic community and its legacy keepers in the past, present, and into the future. Or consider a walking tour to discover Harlem’s historic treasures firsthand. Enjoy our annual art exhibits and expanded special events, created with partner organizations, offering an in-person connection to Harlem’s vibrant history and spirit, wherever you are.
