Whixley and Allerton Mauleverer Round Walk – 5.0 ml

Meeting Point & Start: 'OUTSIDE' The Anchor Inn at crossroads, Whixley, Nr Knaresborough, N.Yorks.

An easy 4.6 mile walk that takes us through and around the ancient village of Whixley and on to nearby Allerton Mauleverer passing through easy going flat arable landscape with excellent hedgerowed tracks and field pathways

Whixley lies on Rudgate the old Roman road along which the Roman “Hispania” Legion would have marched to nearby Isurium (Aldborough).
It was famous in past times for the cultivation of cherries and many of the villages oldest buildings bear names relating to this occupation.
In the centre of the old village lies the Church of Acension that has dominated the Whixley landscape for over 1000 years and is recorded in the Doomsday Book.

Allerton Mauleverer dates back to 1066 and the estate contains Allerton Castle Englands grandest and most elegant Gothic revival stately home. Built by Lord Mowbray it is famous, in recent times, for its locational use in TV & Film drama productions.
In the distance can be seen the Temple on the Hill said to be the inspiration for the rhyme “The grand old Duke of York” who marched his men to the top of the hill and marched them down again!

The walk will include a refreshment stop of 10 - 15 minutes at approximately half distance point.

The walk will end with a visit to the Anchor Inn or Tancred Farm Cafe for those who wish to stay for a while and partake in light refreshments.

The group is run on a non-profit making basis and all the walks are presented by invitation only and will be voluntarily led and free to participate.
This walking group is formulated for walkers with a moderate but adequate degree of fitness and walking experience & who must have confidence in their own ability to, at the very least, be capable of walking at a minimum pace of 2 -2.5 miles/hr, for a distance of 5 miles and generally be able to keep up with the main body of the walk group on the day.
The pace of the walk will be controlled by the leader to take into account the varied degrees of ability and at NO time should participants walk off ahead in front of the leader unless instructed to do so.
