Ordinarily, I prefer to hike under dense tree canopies, but when it's nighttime and there's a full moon out, nothing beats the wide open spaces of the Marin Headlands. So please join me for an easy, social hike along the Alta Fire Road overlooking Sausalito, with moonlit views all the way to the City and the East Bay.

The full moon will rise at 4:41 pm, and it will just barely be visible above the East Bay horizon as we begin our hike at 5:01 pm, three minutes after sunset. We'll stay on the fire road for about two and a half miles, take a break at a particularly good viewpoint very near the junction of the Morning Sun Trail, and then return the way we came. (Don't be late! All of our hikes start EXACTLY on time.)

There will still be enough lingering sunlight to see fairly well at the beginning, but full darkness will set in quickly, so each person MUST bring a light. That can be a flashlight (red filters encouraged), a headlamp (please remember NEVER to look a fellow hiker in the face when you're wearing a headlamp) or your phone (if the light is bright and you've got enough battery to last throughout the evening).

**Hike stats:** 4.8 miles roundtrip, with about 600 feet of vertical gain. Pretty easy, at least in the daytime, and the uphill is generally gentle, with only a few short, steeper sections on our way to the viewpoint.

With a wide fire road, and in the interest of having a fun, social outing, I'll increase the maximum attendance to 15 instead of our usual 8, and you may bring one guest (click the plus sign when you RSVP if you want to bring a guest).

**Name that moon:** November's full moon is known as the Beaver Moon, a name given by Native Americans who observed the animals busily shoring up their dams before the winter's ice arrived.
