Berkeley Tour- Rose Garden&Rose Walk, Bernard Maybeck-Residential Architecture

Details

The parking enforcement signs I've seen on streets near the Rose Garden state, there is no time limit for parking here on the weekends. But be sure to check the signs where you park. During the week we'll be sure to return to the cars within the parking time limits.

Please don't be late. But if you are, you may be able to catch us as we walk on Euclid Ave. into the Rose Garden(restrooms available.

The Hillside Club founded in Berkeley in 1900 proposed building houses in the hills that fit into the natural landscape. Houses that nestled into the hillside, built with a natural, unpainted look. Architects Bernard Maybeck and John Gaylord Howard built houses in keeping with these ideas. We'll see many of these today. Houses built from 1907 to the 60s.

For after the tour: the walk is near two of the nicest shopping and restaurant districts in the East Bay. Combined, having over a hundred places to eat and drink. As well as some of the most unique shops to be found in the Bay Area. Below are links to directories for these. I highly recommend Taco Talavera at Peralta & Solano Aves., for after the tour. Excellent grilled fish tacos.

Shattuck Ave. from Rose St. to University Ave. aka "The Gourmet Ghetto".

Solano Ave. from San Pablo Ave. to the Alameda.

This event is for hikers or strong walkers, who can walk about 3.5 miles, up steep streets and very uneven stone stair paths. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots and your hiking pole if you use one.

We'll also see Julia Morgan and John Hudson Thomas houses.

Itinerary:
Hawthorne Steps
Vine Lane

How to find where we're meeting:

We're meeting at the intersection of Eunice St.& Euclid Ave. Just take Shattuck Ave. (Shattuck ends up going into Solano Ave. and changes names twice before that!, but just stay on it past the commercial district.) to Eunice St., make a right and go all the way up to the dead end at Euclid. There is a park bench there on the southwest corner of the same block as the Berkeley Rose Garden.
I recommend arriving early to leave plenty of time to find parking on the residential streets that surround the area near the intersection of Eunice & Euclid Ave. Streets like Eunice, Euclid, Glen, & Laurel.

Those taking advantage of public transportation, please know that the meeting location is a spectacular, no more than two mile walk, from the downtown Berkeley BART station. If you try to walk as diagonally as possible through the grid of streets you will love it. Leave extra time. A great alternative for those wishing a long walk.

There's also an opportunity on the tour to do a side by side comparison of the most noted Berkeley architects of 100 years ago.
In one short stretch of Hawthorne Terrace, between the Vine Ln. stair path and the Hawthorne Steps stair path, we'll find the following:
1404 & 1411 Hawthorne Terrace - Julia Morgan, 1911
1408 Hawthorne Terrace - Bernard Maybeck, 1921
1427 Hawthorne Terrace - John Hudson Thomas, 1924
1435 Hawthorne Terrace - John Hudson Thomas, 1924
and others.
