Hiking and Mountain Skills

This weekend is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to practice mountain skills,
improve navigation skills, pre assessment candidates or simply anyone who wants
to hike with a qualified mountaineering Ireland course director and to discover the
Comeragh and the Galtee mountains.
During those few days you will gain useful information, skills and tips that will help
keep you safe on the hills and mountains during day time, night time, in bad weather
conditions or both pretty much anywhere in the world .

What gear do I need !
Wear comfortable clothing like – leggings, tracksuit bottoms, breathable T-Shirt and
fleece & an extra warm layer (but no cotton fabrics and no jeans).
Be ready for the rain and pack a rain jacket and rain trousers.
A hat and gloves to keep you safe from the wind.
Wear good sturdy hiking boots (No runners) with woolly or synthetic socks.
Have a backpack with water minimum 1.5 litres, sandwiches and snacks, coffee, or
tea. There is nothing more rewarding than a nice cup of coffee or tea drunk on top of
the mountain.
Don’t forget to bring first aid kit with plaster and bandages, personal medicine, inhaler,
epipen etc…
In Addition: you can bring an OS map of the area or an East West map.
However, maps and a compass can be provided by the instructor. Have your phone fully charged .
Some level of fitness is essential for those hikes which can be strenuous and up to 7
hours in duration.
The price per hikes is €30 (1 free hike for people who didn’t claim the hike as part of my Mountain Skills package)
Accommodation in a dormitory is €20/night (4 beds in males. 4 beds in female or 8 beds mixed)

Each course costs €120 and €100 for groups up to 6 people, under 18s and students.

Mountain Skills 1 and 2, is a nationally accredited course by the Mountain Training Board of Ireland and is delivered in an upland environment.

The aim of this course is to help you learn the skills you need to get out hiking; independently, safely, responsibly in the mountains of Ireland, the UK and beyond.

You will get a recap on Mountain Skills 1 and you will learn how to navigate with confidence using a map, a compass and proper hiking equipment in any weather conditions during daytime, in poor visibility or at night (MS2).

At the end of this course, you will have taken a big step forward in developing your own self-confidence and enjoyment in hiking in the Irish mountain wilderness, the UK and the rest of the world pretty much!
Some hiking experience is essential before joining the scheme however, you don’t need to be an expert.

Registration with Mountaineering Ireland is essential in order to take part in the mountain skills courses and the registration fee is €28.
