Buckquarter Creek and Holden’s Mill are a pair of loop trails along the Eno that involve some elevation changes as well as the typical rocks and roots.
Ridge Trail and Fieldstone will carry us north of the Eno and will add about
1.5 miles to the trip.

**You should expect some roots, rocks and poor/uneven footing in certain sections. In order to reduce the chance of a fall, a hiking pole or poles is recommended. Portions of the trail may also be a bit muddy if there's been recent rain.**

• What We'll Do
We will start at the Cox Mountain trailhead which is located in the Fews Ford picnic area. Rather than crossing the river on the swinging bridge, we’ll follow the river until we pick up Buckquarter Creek Trail. About half way through this section we will exit north onto Ridge Trail. This trail connects to Fieldstone Trail which will carry us to the fourth trail on our hike, Holden's Mill. Ridge Trail involves a crossing of Buckquarter Creek that can be problematic depending on the water level. If we decline the crossing we'll retrace our steps to follow Ridge Trail back down to Buckquarter. To complete the hike, we’ll walk the Holden’s Mill loop then follow Buckquarter back to our starting point. The total will be about 6 miles regardless following either route.

• Trails: Buckquarter, Ridge Trail, Fieldstone, Holden’s Mill

• Distance: about 6 miles.

• Difficulty: All of these trails are moderate, with tree roots and rocks. Lots of ups and downs. The trail has an elevation gain of close to 400 feet. Buckquarter is typical but with a long flat stretch along the river

• Facilities: Restrooms are available at the trailhead.

• Parking: Parking is available at the trailhead at the Fews Ford picnic area, 6101 Cole Mill Road Durham, NC 27705. There is also parking at the new visitor center on the right just before the picnic area

After Hike Plans: Lunch at Picnic Barbecue, 1647 Cole Mill Rd. For a light lunch it’s hard to beat their shrimp boat or barbecue boat. The brisket is great also.

• What to Bring
Plenty of WATER, comfortable hiking shoes or boots, water, **hiking pole(s) as appropriate for trail conditions**, clothing appropriate for the weather, sun-screen, and perhaps a snack. In bug season we also recommend a good mosquito and tick repellent.

• Important to Know
While the group may spread out on the trail, as a courtesy, please let the organizers know if you do not intend to complete the hike with the group leaders. While we are not liable for you on the trail, we do want to keep track of our numbers if possible.

• Dogs: well-mannered, friendly dogs on leashes 6 ft or less are welcome.

• Weather Policy
If the weather forecast looks particularly bad, I'll reschedule. Check this site a couple of hours before the event. Otherwise, if there's a possibility of rain you may want to bring a light rain jacket.
