Name: Hiking the MST along the Eno from River Forest to Little Blowing Rock

• What we'll do: We will hike a section of the Mountains-to-the-Sea (MST) trail along the Eno River from Durham's River Forest city park eastward to the Little Blowing Rock geological formation at the northwest corner of Penny's Bend Nature Preserve, then return to River Forest.

• Trails: The hike will be an out-and-back hike along the MST.

• Distance: Between 5 1/2 and 6 miles. Since it is an out-and-back trail, you can opt-out at any time by turning around and going back (but let the event organizer know if you do this).

• Difficulty: **Mostly easy**. The MST is essentially flat throughout, but it is a bit of a climb to the top of Little Blowing Rock and back down (those not wanting to do this climb can stay at the bottom beside the river). Also, the trail is unpaved, with the usual rocks and roots, which may be covered with leaves in the fall, and also may be muddy in places if it has rained recently.

• Facilities: A portable toilet is available at River Forest.

• Items of interest: Little Blowing Rock (so named because, under certain windy conditions, light objects dropped from the top may be blown back up), an old farm building, turtles basking in the river if it is sunny and warm.

• Apres hike
Nothing official planned.

• What to bring
Plenty of WATER, comfortable hiking shoes or boots, water, hiking poles if you like, clothing appropriate for the weather, sun screen, and perhaps a snack. In bug season we also recommend a good mosquito and tick repellent.

• Important to know
We ask that hikers be able to maintain at least a **2.5 mph** pace on this hike so that the group does not get too spread out. And as a courtesy, please let the organizers know if you do not intend to complete the hike with the group leaders. While we are not liable for you on the trail, we do want to keep track of our numbers if possible. And don't pet the hairy vines!

• Dogs: well-mannered, friendly dogs on leashes 6 ft or less are welcome.

• Weather policy
If the weather forecast is for rainy or otherwise nasty weather, we'll reschedule. If it's questionable, check back here an hour or two before the event.
