Schuylkill Center Winter Hike
Details
3-4 hours, 10 miles, brisk pace, many hills, some big, small trails, explore outside center on streets, frogs in summer, dogs are prohibited from Center
The Schuylkill Center has some of the most beautiful trails around. They twist and turn go up and down and are hard follow even with a map. I'm told the people who designed Central Park in NYC had a hand in making the trails. There are also a section of trails that are hidden, not on the map. Of course we will head there, then out of center to view some beautiful landscapes which includes Manatawna Farms which is owned by the Center. This is one of the neatest and unique neighborhoods you can find.
From here we can head 2 different ways to a very weird neighborhood right along the Schuylkill. One way is simple, we take this steep road down, passing a old mill with a raging stream next to it. The other way is to partially bushwhack through some woods. Usually we take the hill.
The river neighborhood has varied houses including a park with maybe a half dozen large chimes that you can try. This leads us to Port Royal Rd, where you would not want to take your car, because it's steep, cobblestone, and full of ruts. Easier to walk. We duck back into the Environmental Center from the road.
If they block the main road to the center there is parking about 100 yards down the road (towards Port Royal Ave
