Jawaharlal Nehru and the Gandhi Dynasty

Details

Jawaharlal Nehru was a wealthy lawyer and highly westernized after attending British universities. After the Amritsar Massacre he aligned closely with Mahatma Gandhi's freedom movement and became a fervent nationalist and socialist. He lived with India's poor and downtrodden. He protested against the British and served many years in prison. After gaining independence from the British, he became the first Prime Minister of India. He looked to the Soviets for 5-year planning and modern manufacturing. He looked to the U.S. for money. He saw the breakup of India forming Pakistan and the civil strife and wars that followed. He saw war with China. He worked tirelessly to lift India out of poverty. After his death, his daughter Indira became Prime Minister. After her assassination, the Prime Minister office fell to her son, Rajiv Gandhi.

It's an incredible story.

We'll show clips from great documentaries and clips from films capturing reenacting his lifetime. We'll have an Indian host talking about his experience during Nehru's time. We'll pause often for discussion. Afterward, we'll go to dinner together.

We'll meet at the Boston Public Library, Mezzanine Conference Room 3
