Aberdeen Tin Hau Temple
Details
Aberdeen has always had a strong connection with the sea. Legend has it that the very name of our Special Administrative Region comes from this Southern warren of Hong Kong Island. Aberdeen, known as 香港仔 or Little Hong Kong, in Cantonese, has always had a whiff (pun intended) of fragrance in its title. Now with some of the best fish-ball soup in the Territory, Aberdeen used to be Hong Kong Island's main port and home to its indiginious fishing fleet. Perhaps "Little Hong Kong" was mistaken for the whole island by ignorant foreign sailors. Either way, we now get a chance to enjoy the neighborhood and all it offers.
Tucked away behind Aberdeen Praya Road along a long-forgotten seashore in a dignified Taoist temple dedicated to the everpresent Taoist saint Tin Hau. Tin Hau and a few of her spiritual companions now reside in a temple overlooking the hustle and bustle of the area. During this visit, we'll make our way from the Wong Chuk Hang MTR station to the temple and back again. Afterward, Hong Kong Sacred Spaces will host our Annual Meeting over coffee, tea, and snacks. This will be a great opportunity to meet many of the new members and get a chance to hear what we're planning on doing in the weeks and months ahead. There's no obligation to come to the meeting but if you want to join a members' meeting you'll need to sign up as a Hong Kong Sacred Spaces Member which can be done the day of. In any event, I look forward to seeing you all for another Sacred Spaces event!
