Second Sundays Spirited Sails . . . (“S4’s”)
w/VirginiaMaritimeMinistries (VAM2)
WHAT: Introductory Sails aboard "Genesis" to unplug from the everyday distractions, and plug into positive "Friendship" building, through strengthening relationships, communications and teamwork while actively sailing together, under the guidance of a US Sailing Certified Instructor!
WHEN: Departure from Queens Lake Marina. "Genesis" departs dock at 1:30 (duration of sail ~ 3 1/2 hrs wind / crew dependent), pretty much every "Second" Sunday afternoons: May => Thanksgiving/beyond . . . (with some exceptions to accommodate special sailing events).
WHY: Fun, Fellowship, Food, and a Fantastic Time ahead. No cell phones, no motor, using only what wind we get!
WHO: YOU, So GET YOUR CREW TOGETHER, INVITE A FRIEND, or SIGN ON AS A SOLO STOWAWAY NOW to reserve your spot! (Note: 2 => 6 crew required to go!)
WHERE: http://www.queenslake.net/marina.html is where “Genesis” is docked at slip “C22”, and will be waiting for you to board at 1:30, and casting off shortly afterwards.
http://www.queenslake.net/maps.html will get you there with a click for printable map and directions. Local detail: Drive to the end of East Queens Drive, down the drive to the water, and park to the right of the brown gazebo on the dock. (I highly recommend using the facilities, at perhaps the Wawa gas/convenience store on Merrimack Trail and Penniman Rd., before boarding.)
NEW DETAILS:
! Limit: Minimum TWO (2) to sail, Maximum SIX (6) crewmembers per outing. ("First Timers" have seniority; "repeat crew" always welcomed to "fill the boat” by bringing someone new.) Self-ensure minimum by inviting a friend, or consider child, as outing is “family friendly”, and I have PFDs in every size, if needed. (Regrets, if < 2: cancel & refund, or “priority waitlist” for future sail).
! RSVP ONLY ACCEPTED & CONFIRMED by receipt of completed "CrewLog" and $25 "Hold Commitment" for sailing manifest and to secure your place onboard, precluding last minute "no-shows" that have prevented others from participating on this limited space activity. Refundable upon request once on location, or much appreciated as a donation to keep the boat running!
To obtain "Crew Log": provide your personal email address for pdf.file - pls forward email and cell phone in your RSVP response), well in advance of preferred sailing date(s) noted separately in reply-email to [email protected].
! NOTE: To best serve our community, actual sailing date assignment to be directly confirmed by David Chin, Commodore, VAM2, by pre-sail notification/preparation email days following RSVP Close. Those Crew Logs and deposits received after capacity is met, will have first choice of subsequent sails, or returned.
“Genesis” is a Hunter 240, water-ballasted compact-cruiser and serves as the flagship for Virginia Maritime Ministries (VAM2). She’s tender until she sets her heel, and if so inclined, she’ll be ready to have you “take the tiller”. So, if you’ve never sailed by tiller before, practice now driving with your windows down to feel the wind, and your hand on the BOTTOM of your steering wheel to get accustomed to the direction of your hand motion to command the craft. No doubt this will be a refreshing time for all aboard, and wonderful memories will be recorded on digital discs!
ESSENTIALS:
- Non-marring, lace-up (NO flip-flops) shoes are required for safety, and
- Sun block LOTION and non-oily insect repellent is recommended, as is a
- Brimmed hat and sunglasses (with “keepers”) for personal protection, property preservation.
- If handling lines, sailing gloves (bike or workout gloves are fine, or close-fitting leather garden gloves) will help protect against rope burns or blisters.
- “Sea-Snacks” (neat finger foods, no fine china), and favorite beverages – I will have a cooler prepared, softdrinks and water aboard.
- A fun and adventurous spirit aboard!
THE FINE PRINT:
Attached in a confirmation email responding to your RSVP to me at [email protected] (you must include your regular email address that can accept a word.doc), as standard protocol, will be the Crew Log “Medical Release,/Liability Agreement” form that must be completed, signed and faxed/pdf’d back to me for the sailing manifest and our float plan, (required THURSDAY prior to sailing). All Crew must be able to swim, however WE ALL wear PFDs regardless, while on board. Register early and I’ll send you a “Start Sailing NOW” guide to help you prep your crew for a most enjoyable first-time out on a sailboat. Please share with your guest/crew to help them be best prepared for a great experience on the York River, and call me with any questions (631 495-8654 cell). Looking fwd to a great time!
P.S. - Post Sail Option: Crews of VAM2 have often found a desire to continue the camaraderie ashore in support of continued fellowship, feasting family-style sharing our adventures. Simple solution may be for dinner at a local eatery, if so desired by crew consensus. (pls advise of any dietary requirements).
