About Huddersfield Ramblers walks
Nearly all our led walks as the Huddersfield Group of the Ramblers’ Association are offered free of charge to Meetup members to participate in – there is no requirement to be a Ramblers member to attend, though we hope you may choose to join the Ramblers after sampling a few walks!
DON'T BE PUT OFF IF IT LOOKS LIKE NOT MANY PEOPLE HAVE BOOKED ON MEETUP - there will be plenty of people there!
We usually offer a choice of two walks each Sunday, plus some walks on Saturdays and on Tuesday evenings during the summer months. All walk leaders are (experienced) volunteers from within Huddersfield Ramblers, who plan the walks carefully and recce the routes in advance.
Up to 10 Meetup participants are allowed to join our group per walk, with each participant being allowed to bring one guest.
Our walks range from 4-5 mile strolls through to full-day outings of up to 20 miles; on a typical Sunday, though, we usually offer one walk of around 10-13 miles and another of around 6-9 miles. In choosing to come on any given walk, please plan accordingly in terms of your abilities, fitness, and what you will need to bring. The list below provides general pointers, but please get in touch with the leader (via the link available in the Ramblers website listing provided for each walk) if you have any questions at all.
- Walks are circular unless otherwise stated.
- With occasional exceptions, our walks are in the countryside. Stiles and hills are very likely to feature. Boggy/muddy terrain may be met at almost any time of year. Livestock may also be encountered.
- Use the walk gradings (below) to assess the likely level of difficulty.
- On all walks you will need to bring something to eat and drink.
Excess food is recommended on longer walks in winter and you should ensure you have plenty to drink in summer. - Check the weather forecast beforehand, and ensure that you are wearing or carrying suitable clothing for the likely conditions (and remember they may be changeable). In summer, make sure that you have adequate protection from the sun.
- Dogs may be brought unless stated otherwise. However, if cattle are met, the walk leader may ask you to allow the main party to cross the field first, leaving you to follow on with your pet. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.
- If you need to leave the walk at any time, or if any untoward circumstances occur (e.g. illness or injury during the walk) please inform the walk leader.
- For the well-being of individuals and the group, the walk leader may decline to take anyone on a walk who they consider to have unsuitable clothing or footwear for the conditions, or who is thought by the leader unlikely to be able to cope with the pace or length of the walk.
- The leader reserves the right to amend or cancel a walk in extreme weather conditions. Any cancellation will be shown on the Meetup site and on the walk listing on the Ramblers website where possible, no later than 2 hours ahead of the walk start time; also check the Huddersfield Ramblers Facebook page on the day of the walk.
Our walk gradings
- Leisurely/Easy = route entirely or mainly on good paths. Climbs few and gradual. Suitable for anyone of good fitness.
- Moderate = route involves some ascents and descents, which may be steep, but are unlikely to be prolonged. Any rough, off-path terrain will be for short periods only.
- Strenuous = route involves prolonged climbing or frequent ups and downs throughout, and may include rough, off-path terrain, possibly for quite lengthy periods.
Ground conditions underfoot may sometimes make walks seem more difficult than the advertised grade.
