Breakneck - 7th Thanksgiving warmup hike - (option for Beacon hike afterwards)

** This 6:30am short rock scramble & hike is a great way to start your day or to serve as a warmup if you're doing the 8:45am HVH hike at Mt. Beacon.

This hike is not recommended for first-time hikers. Please read the full description!!! There's no sweep following the last hiker(s). Slower hikers should review trail map and be able to navigate in their own.

The Hike: We start hiking at 6:30am at the yellow Wilkinson Trail. This is a fun, but somewhat strenuous, hike up scenic Breakneck Ridge. A moderate pace will allow some of us to make the 8:45am hike at Mt. Beacon. (6-minute drive)
The first .8 mile includes several steep rock scrambles that can be very challenging for some. We will move at a moderate pace.

The route:
- Meet/start at the yellow Wilkinson Trail (800 feet north of tunnel). (You can also choose to take the white Breakneck Trail at the tunnel)
- Take yellow several hundred yards to green Nimham Trail.
- Take green to the white Breakneck Ridge Trail (just above flagpole).
- Turn left onto white BRT and take it to red By-pass trail.
- Turn left onto red and head downhill.
- Turn left onto yellow and continue to Rt. 9D

Distance: Approx 3.2 miles
Duration: Approx 1.5 - 2 hours
Gear: clothing for colder temps; water; snack, appropriate footwear; headlamp
Elevation Gain: Approx 1,400 feet
Map: NY-NJ Trail Conf. Map #102, Avenza App, or similar mapping system.

NOTE: You are responsible for bringing appropriate gear, supplies, clothing, first aid, etc. You should review topographic maps and trail features carefully; understanding topography of any hike is key to your knowing where you are, where you're going, and how to get back.
