Who's Organizing: Chris Fisher 8455493320
How to find us: Big Hollow Road Trail Head. Look for a Blue Forester
Distance: 8 Miles
Elevation Gain: 2700 FT

The Blackhead Range is made up of the third, fourth, and fifth highest mountains in the Catskills: Black Dome (3990 feet), Blackhead (3940 feet), and Thomas Cole (3940 feet). The Range is located in the northern Catskills (north of Hunter Mt) in Greene County.

Summary: This 8 mile loop, with an out and back to Blackhead's great eastern view and another out & back to bag Black Dome & Thomas Cole on the Blackhead Range. The area got its name because when viewed from a distance the tops of the peaks appear Black due to the spruce/Balsam Summits. The hike starts out on the red marked Black Dome Trail, goes up the yellow marked Batavia Kill trail and then up the blue marked Escarpment trail to the summit of Blackhead. Then it's west on the yellow marked Blackhead Mtn. trail and west on the red marked BD trail to Thomas Cole. From there back to the parking lot is all on the red marked BD trail. There is an overall elevation gain of over 2700 feet for this strenuous hike. The ascent of Blackhead from the BK trail is 1200' in .9 miles, so quite steep.

What to bring: be prepared. In addition hiking boots, a map(Catskill Trail Map 141), compass, hat, gloves, and cold-weather wicking clothing in layers, food, water, phone/camera.
