Details
Pocahontas SP is closed 12/2 & 12/3.
Powhatan State Park is wide open. The forecast is calling for a sunny, beautiful day in the park. There are many leaves on the ground but there is still color.
There is an option for lunch at The Cafe at Maiden’s after the hike.
There will be two lollipop loops(approx 2.5 & 4 miles). Both starting and ending at the equestrian lot. This will give hikers the option to hike one or two hikes.
The first will be approx. 4 miles through and alongside forests on the Cabin, Bigwoods, and Pine trails.
The second, after a short break will be approx 2.5 miles. This will include the River Trail along the James River, trails in forests and open fields. This is the most popular hike in the park.
Neither hike will be a race through the woods.
The ability to negotiate over and around horse plop/apples is helpful.
There is a pit toilet at the parking lot. You will pass a heated restroom with running water on your right at the playground on the way to the meetup location.
There are roots and rocks on the rustic trails. Leaves and pine needles will cover some of these. Trails may be shared with horses and bikers. We will yield to both and stay on the right side of the trail. Hiking poles should be considered.
If you do not have a state park pass bring $5.00 cash. The contact station will likely be closed. Allow time to make payment.
Other Payment Options:
A receipt from REI can be used. Provide the bottom portion of the receipt to the contact station ranger or insert it in a self-pay envelope.
Free passes for one day admission can be picked up at many businesses.
