Sci-Fi Group: "The Road Not Taken" by Harry Turtledove & "The Egg" by Andy Weir

Do you like science fiction? Join the Jefferson Humanists Sci Fi Discussion Group where we discuss sci-fi short stories, novellas and movies. We typically meet by Zoom on the 4th Thursday of each month and occasionally meet in-person to watch sci-fi movies.

In September, we invite you to read two short stories, "The Road Not Taken" by Harry Turtledove and "The Egg" by Andy Weir.

In "The Road Not Taken," an alien race, the Roxolani, travels across the universe using gravity manipulation and come across Earth. They prepare to conquer another planet as they have so many before, confident in their success, since Earth is primitive, not having learned to travel space using gravity manipulation. Will Earth be subjugated by the Roxolani as so many worlds have been in the past? What will be the outcome of this first contact with a alien civilization.

"The Egg" considers what happens when you die. It very thought provoking and only 2 pages long.

Please read these stories on your own and come to the meeting on September 26th to share your thoughts. For the Turtledove story, think about other first contact science fiction stories you've read or seen in movies in the past to consider during our discussion.
