Mount Rinjani, is one of the best climbs in the region, and should be in every hiker’s bucket list. Sunrise at the 3,726m summit is undoubtedly the highlight of the trip, but there is so much more to see and enjoy before and after the summit.
Our event starts at Lombok airport where we meet the rest of the group and our mountain guides. We then head towards our homestay in Sembalun. Time permitting, you can enjoy an afternoon stroll around the surrounding fruit orchards and vegetable farms, or maybe take a dip in the pool. Either way, Rinjani peak is never out of sight, a constant reminder of what's in store for us the next day.
We start our hike the next morning, traversing through a variety of terrain, like farmland, savannah grassland, alpine and tundra region. We should reach our crater rim campsite in time for sunset.
Early the next morning, we start in the dark for the summit. A rocky climb eventually leads us to the infamous (and dreaded) scree slopes. As you slide backwards with each step, your physical fitness will be tested along with your mental perseverance. We hope to summit in time to see the rising sun slowly lighting up the valley below, with Rinjani casting her shadow across Lombok Strait, towards Mount Agong in Bali 100km away.
Descending back down to campsite is fun, and easily the most enjoyable section. Retracing your steps down the scree slopes will be much easier. Go slow, and enjoy the morning sun and crisp air. Or run down the low impact terrain, it'll make you grin like a little kid!
After a late breakfast, we head down into the crater. This steep rocky section continues into alpine forest trail, towards the next campsite - a lake at 2,000m elevation.
The next 2 days, we hike through a rainforest trail towards Torean village. It will be a slow hike, not because of difficulty, but because of frequent stops to enjoy the truly breath-taking sights and sceneries.
We hope to exit at Torean before noon. After washing up and a quick lunch, we take a 2 hour drive to catch a ferry to Gili Air. It’s then a free and easy 3d2n on an island resort. On our final day, we head back to Lombok island. On the way to the airport, we stop for a traditional meal, some shopping and sightseeing.
This event is NOT for those who are only interested in peak-bagging, but physical fitness is still a MUST. This hike is NOT suitable for beginners or inexperienced hikers. Do not underestimate the mountain, and do not overestimate yourself. Be honest to yourself - do not join if this is the first time that you want to find out what hiking or camping is all about.
IMPORTANT: keep in mind that there is always a chance that the authorities or guides may not allow us to proceed with our hiking plans. While all reasonable precautions will be taken to minimise risk, we cannot control nature. Be fully aware that we will be climbing next to an active volcano in an earthquake zone, at elevations with dangerous storms. The organiser cannot be held responsible or liable for any cancellation or itinerary change.
