Our final event of 2024 is here and we're delighted to have Green Software Brighton stalwart Oliver Winks, talking about measuring websites (power and carbon).

Websites are quite often the 'digital face' of our businesses. Understanding the sustainability impact involves understanding how websites place demand on natural resources and how we can measure and improve them.

As the Technical CoFounder of [Root & Branch](https://rootandbranch.io) and the creator of [Cardamon](https://cardamon.io) Oli has spent many months at the coal face (excuse the pun) understanding what it requires to measure all sorts of software. Part of that work has been a focus on websites, not only from the front end but also on the backend and he is going to share his learnings and some actions.

Arrive from 18:00 for pizza and drinks. Talk will start at 18:30. We always head for a drink and a chat locally afterwards too. Talk will be live streamed - stream will begin with the talk at 18:30.

**Einführung des Blauen Engels für Software - Was ist das Konzept hinter dem weltweit ersten Umweltzeichen für nachhaltige und transparente Software?**

Steigende Anforderungen an Software führen häufig zu unnötig hohem Energieverbrauch der Hardware und zu vorzeitiger Hardwareerneuerung. Dies ist ein enormes Umweltproblem, da die jährlichen Mengen an Elektroschrott weltweit zunehmen. Ineffiziente Software trägt maßgeblich zur hardwarebedingten Obsoleszenz und damit zur Zunahme von Elektroschrott bei.

Das Umweltbundesamt hat diese Problematik unter anderem durch die Entwicklung und Einführung in 2021/2022 des Blauen Engels für Software adressiert, wo zum ersten Mal die Energie- und Ressourceninanspruchnahmen von Software in einem physischen Messlabor sichtbar gemacht werden konnten. Der Blaue Engel ist ein unabhängiges, staatliches und multikriterielles Umweltzeichen und umfasst neben der Transparenz des Energie- und Ressourcenverbrauchs auch Kriterien wie Abwärtskompatibilität und Nutzerautonomie. Teilweise werden z.B. die Gewährleistung von Sicherheitsupdates, aber auch die Dokumentation von Schnittstellen und die Offenlegung von Datenformaten gefordert. Diese Kriterien sollen die Hardware-Lebensdauer der Geräte verlängern.

In diesem Vortrag werden der Blaue Engel und seine Kriterien für Software sowie die aktuelle Ausweitung seines Geltungsbereichs auf mobile Apps und Client-Server-Software vorgestellt.

Im Anschluss gibt es noch die Möglichkeit gemeinsam zu diskutieren, wie wir unsere Software für den Blauen Engel zertifizieren können.

Die Veranstaltung findet wieder in **Präsenz** statt. Falls **auswärtige** Interessent:innen gerne **remote** teilnehmen möchten, dann bitte entsprechende RSVP wählen, damit das Catering angepasst werden kann.
