It has been two years since Quarto became the most popular reproducible publication tool in data science and the R community. However, Quarto is so much more than just a publication tool! I started using it in late 2022, and it has helped me become more organized, productive and connected with people in the data science community.
In this talk, I will not focus on the technical aspects of 'how' to use this tool. In the first part of the talk, I would like to report the latest news and trends seen in the useR conference and Posit conf, the two biggest global R events. In the second part, I will share my own experience in using Quarto for my career: from learning new skills, collaborating with co-workers, teaching university courses networking and building a community (CAMIS collaboration). It is a powerful tool to share your work, and make new connections - both for work and for fun! I hope this talk will provide you with some new ideas on how to use this fantastic technology to fulfil your goals.

Join us for the Season opener at CalgaryR. Are you curious about the language, are you a seasoned data modeller or statistician, or anything in between? This is an excuse to mingle with like-minded people, mentor someone who is just starting, or listen to a talk and share in some lively discussions.

There will be two talks, the first one is called "**It's a feature, not a bug! Coercion, recycling and sub-setting**". We will be digging deep to uncover some of R's superpowers and pillars of the core R syntax for expressive and powerful data manipulation and mathematics.

The second talk is "**Data Science Proof of Concept Design: Applications in Oil and Gas**". Dr. Muir will show the process for managing and executing data science-based Proof of Concept projects in Oil and Gas. This concentrates on the initial understanding of the problem and requirements from the client to develop the analytics, predictive modelling and forecasting. Once defined and architected, solutions pass over to the implementation team.
The impact of the following examples of projects is in the 10s of millions per year. These projects took from 3-8 weeks

* Increased solvent recovery from oil sands tailings, 1st and 2nd stages
* Steam heat allocation in oil sands extraction and processing plant
* Soft sensor design to generate near real-time distillation curves (ASTM D86), octane rating, cloud point, etc., of crude and processed oil
* Estimated Ultimate Recovery (EUR) of unconventional assets: analysis and optimization

Leveraging R Programming for GxP System Development in Clinical Trials / Wykorzystanie programowania w języku R do rozwoju systemu GxP w badaniach klinicznych.

You are invited to an event where Anna Dacewicz from AstraZeneca Poland will discuss the development of a Centralized Monitoring system for clinical trials. The presentation will explore the challenges of creating systems that facilitate the analysis and reporting of clinical and operational data while considering user requirements. We will also delve into the use of R in building a comprehensive system. Furthermore, we will address the compliance requirements set by regulatory agencies overseeing clinical trials.

**Speech #2:**
**Łukasz Wałejko (TT Science)** will share his insights on building complex web applications using the Shiny framework, drawing from his remarkable experience across diverse programming languages like Python, TypeScript, and more (we counted 10!). While new to R with just six months of production use, Łukasz stands out as a rare example of a seasoned software engineer entering a space typically dominated by scientists transitioning into programming. His deep technical knowledge and versatility as both a backend and frontend developer make his perspective especially intriguing. Having worked on projects ranging from healthcare financial analysis to open-source tools for annotating wildlife footage, he will discuss not only the technical challenges and advantages of Shiny but also how his broader engineering mindset influences his approach to development in R.
