As Baldy is closed for the foreseeable future we’ll go for Cucamonga Peak after our successful summit of Timber last month 👍 Offering one of the coolest summits in the San Gabriel Mountains, the hike to Cucamonga Peak very popular. Cucamonga Peak, at 8,862 feet, has spectacular views from SoCal's high peaks to the urban development below. The hike up to the peak is tough but not brutal, the scenery and views are spectacular, and the summit area is a lot of fun. You might even see some bighorn sheep along the way. The trail starts at Icehouse Canyon; located in a beautiful stretch of the Angeles National Forest near Mount Baldy Village, just southeast of the mighty Mount Baldy. A trail through the canyon leads up to Icehouse Saddle. At 7,500 feet, this low point in the ridgeline offers sweeping views of the western San Gabriel Mountains. From the saddle, we venture deeper into the Cucamonga Wilderness towards Cucamonga Peak, with a steep final ascent to the peak. This hike climbs 4200 feet elevation gain over 11 total miles and is an exceptional, if difficult, hike. Departing from the parking lot along Icehouse Canyon Road, the trail takes course along the northern bank of a creek that flows down the canyon. Crystal clear water tumbles past oaks and sycamores, and this is a fine venue for a directionless romp through nature for those disinterested in following the trail. A half-dozen cabins are spread out along the bottom of the canyon, along with another half-dozen stone foundations (ruins left over from the early days of the Angeles). The trail passes these current and past dwellings, ascending gradually into a wilderness with less and less human impact. This hike is hard so make sure you have good hiking shoes and plenty of water and sunblock and can handle the mileage/elevation gain Meet at the Icehouse Canyon Trailhead. There is a restroom at the parking lot. Meeting time: 7:00AM. Very likely you’ll need to park on the street as the parking lot will be full, then we’ll meet at the trailhead. Please arrive early to park and be on time to the trailhead. You will need an Adventure Pass to park ($5 – Day Pass, $35 Year Pass) that can be obtained at most Sporting Goods store (like Big 5, REI).
