Grassington Christmas Walk - 7 miles
Details
Let’s get Christmas week off to a cracker with a picturesque walk through the Yorkshire Dales and around Grassington, the home of hit Channel 5 series “All Creatures Great & Small”
First, we head south out of the car park towards Linton Falls, a dramatic set of limestone waterfalls on the River Wharfe. We then cross the bridge and follow the path alongside the river, taking in views of the tranquil countryside.
Continuing along the Dales Way, a well-trodden riverside path that gently meanders beside the Wharfe. This section of the walk offers serene views of the river, with opportunities to spot wildlife such as herons or kingfishers. The path eventually brings us to the road leading to the charming hamlet of Conistone, where we can take a rest or explore the village’s old limestone buildings.
From Conistone, we head towards the famous Conistone Dib, a dramatic dry limestone gorge that feels like a natural secret passage through the Dales. We ascend through narrow, rocky terrain surrounded by towering walls of limestone. It’s a highlight of the walk, providing a sense of adventure and awe at the natural landscape.
After emerging from the gorge, we follow the higher paths back towards Grassington, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding Yorkshire Dales. The final stretch of the walk leads us back into the village, where we can admire the stone cottages and busy cobbled square and reward ourselves with a well earned drink at the Devonshire pub (aka The Drovers Arms in the TV show)
It’s a dog friendly group so feel free to bring your dog if you’ve got one. If it’s a big dog bring a harness with a handle so we can lift your dog over stiles. Make sure you have got good recall as there maybe some sheep on the way.
Bring a packed lunch and something to drink.
