What we’re about

Welcome to Leeds Play Readers!!

Reading a play is a great way to enjoy plays, to share an experience as well as to develop confidence in speaking. You'll be introduced to plays and playwrights, subjects and genres that you might not have come across before. After each playreading you will have the opportunity to share your ideas about the play.

We will supply the play for any given session. You'll find out which play it is when we screenshare it so no preparation is required. We're open to all, from people with no previous experience to professional actors. So if you are interested in the theatre, in trying something new why not consider joining in??

We are a local group who met on Sundays at Leeds Central Library prior to the covid-19 pandemic. The Library remains closed on Sundays with no plans to re-open, which means continuing to meet fortnightly on Zoom for the foreseeable future.

Given the reduced spaces we would like to limit participation on Zoom to people who answer yes to both of the following questions:

1.  Do you live in West Yorkshire at the time the advertised session/event will take place?? AND
2.  Would have realistically attended in person had that session taken place in Leeds Central Library??

If you answer yes to both questions then by all means RSVP yes to our events. We have a cut-off of 6pm on the day in question so please make sure you sign up before then. We will then send you a Zoom link out through Meet Up's email. (If you've signed up, it's reached 6pm on the day in question and you haven't received a Zoom link please use Meet Up's e-mail to contact both Mike & Najm and we will do our best to re-send a link).

If you are not living in West Yorkshire at the time of the session or would not have been able or willing to make the trip to the session in Leeds Central Library we would respectfully ask that you do not add yourself to the RSVP for events.
We can only sympathise and apologise if this causes upset or seems unfair – we are a local group transitioning to online and would like to allow those who are living locally and who would have come in person the chance to participate. It has been a difficult decision, which we have not taken lightly. We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this.

Some Q & A about this.
Q: I lived in Bradford and attended Leeds Playreaders Events for 3 years solidly. I moved to a different part of the country 2 months ago. Can I still take part??
A: No. You do not live in West Yorkshire at the time of the session. We would respectfully ask that you do not sign up to any events for now and would encourage you to join groups that are based in your current location or that are open to people wherever they might live.
Q: I am not from the UK. I will definitely be moving to Leeds but will only be here for a few months. Can I join and sign up to events??
A: We would ask that you wait until you arrive in Leeds and only sign up to events over the few months that you are actually here - not before or after.
Q: I live in Manchester, am passionate about the theatre and am looking to join an online group to meet people. Can I join and attend events??
A: No. We would ask that you allow people living in West Yorkshire the chance to take part in the events.
Q: I live in Keighley but would never have made the effort to travel to Leeds for a session. Can I sign up for the event on Zoom??
A: No. We would ask that you allow those who would have come to join the session in person the chance to take part online.
Q: I live in West Yorkshire and would have come to the Library – can I RSVP for myself and a +1??
A: No. We would ask that you RSVP for yourself only.
