What we’re about

For those of you who are just joining or have already joined this meet-up - please include the instrument(s) you play, previous experience playing and singing bluegrass type music, and a list of your favorite bluegrass songs!

This group will meet to play and sing bluegrass and related genre in a "circle jam" format. Members sit in a circle with their musical instrument(s) and take turns introducing and leading songs. If possible, please provide a short history of the song, songwriter, major recording artists, and (discussion of and selection) key to play. Other group members will likely contribute too.
Typical bluegrass instruments include: guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, upright bass, dobro, autoharp, harmonica, ukulele, dulcimer, accordion, and other appropriate instruments.
Those instruments that are difficult to hear in a jam environment - such as miniature bass guitars, electric fiddles, and harmonicas are welcome to bring a small speaker.
Surprisingly, Bill Monroe had an accordionist, Sally Ann Forester - the first woman in bluegrass.
Some of the well known, favorite bluegrass songs include: Amazing Grace, Big Spike Hammer, Blue Moon of Kentucky, Blue Ridge Cabin Home, Cripple Creek, East Kentucky Blues, Fair and Tender Ladies, Fox on the Run, Freight Train, High on a Mountain, I am a Pilgrim, I'll Fly Away, I Know You Rider, I Saw the Light, I Wonder How the Old Folks are Tonight, Kentucky Waltz, L and N Don't Stop Here Any More, Little Maggie, Man of Constant Sorrow, Mountain Dew, Nine Pound Hammer, Old Home Place, Old Joe Clark, Paradise, Rocky Top, Shady Grove, Tennessee Waltz, Walls of Time, Wayfaring Stranger, Wagon Wheel, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, With Body and Soul, Worried Man Blues, among many others.
Bluegrass song format: an instrumental intro, first verse sung by the leader, harmonized chorus, a verse, short instrumental or solo breaks, a verse, chorus, performed in close harmonies on the chorus or refrains, and so forth. Vocals may also include the "high lonesome sound" as well as a bass vocalist. Be such to check out "Southern Raised" a bluegrass band from the Ozark Mountains - their tall baby brother provides amazing bass vocals! Plus, their wonderful harmonies.
Players and singers of all ages and experience levels are welcome. Our meet-up should be a fun learning environment for all!
Bring your instrument(s), music and stand, and small speaker if needed.
We also encourage you to join the SongFarmers of Lexington KY, which meets the 4th Wednesdays, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the American Legion Man-O-War Post 8, 1230 Man-O-War Place, Lexington, KY 40504.
We will be announcing our first meet-up in the next few days.... stay tuned!
