Seanan McGuire's Hugo and Nebula award-winning Wayward Children series is praised as fantasy writing at its best, with YA crossover appeal. McGuire populates her page-turner stories with diverse characters and suspenseful plots, and each book is about 200 pages long. In November we'll read and discuss the first in the series, Every Heart a Doorway. The author centers her narrative around a boarding school for children who have visited magical lands and since returned to the real world. Its compassionate director Eleanor tells the parents of children that her school will help them readjust to a normal life after past trauma. But Eleanor's true goal is to provide a place of acceptance and support for teenagers who have traveled to magical worlds and been returned against their will. The worlds the teens have been to range from dark underworlds to candy-colored fairylands, but all the kids wish for nothing more than to find "their door" and return. NPR describes Every Heart a Doorway as "a mini-masterpiece of portal fantasy — a jewel of a book that deserves to be shelved with Lewis Carroll's and C. S. Lewis' classics." Join us in November to explore McGuire's engaging world. Every Heart a Doorway was published in 2016 and is available in public libraries and online. NOTE: Bookworms will meet earlier in November and December to avoid holiday conflicts.
