The Maryland side of Great Falls is a part of the C & O Canal National Historic Park and is located off of Falls Road in Potomac MD.
At Great Falls, the Potomac River builds up speed and force as it falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and flows through the narrow Mather Gorge. There is a beautiful waterfall and we should get some great fall foilage.
There are two overlooks near the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center. To the north, the Washington Aqueduct Observation Deck offers a view of the upper falls. To the south, the Olmsted Island Bridges offer several scenic views of the Great Falls. There are several hiking trails in this area. Some of the most spectacular up close views can be seen from the Billy Goat Trail. You should note that portions of the trail are very challenging and not appropriate for all visitors. The C & O Canal Towpath also runs through the park and is ideal for biking and jogging.
The Great Falls Tavern is The Visitor Center and open daily from 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
The price is confusing. It says the park is free but admission is $10-$20, so bring at least that much.

Amtrak has a train that runs beside the ocean from San Diego CA to San Luis Obispo CA, before turning east to go inward. There's talk of relocating the tracks further inland due to erosion and repeated track damage. No date is set yet, but this might be a last chance to ride beside the ocean on a train.
This trip includes a few nights each in San Diego, to L.A., to San Luis Obispo before flying home.I plan to visit a few of California's famous wildflower fields, maybe a whale watch, etc. We should be able to spot wildflowers from the train too.
Everyone is responsible for acquiring their own flights, hotels and train transportation. This should cost somewhere around $1800-$2000.
