What we’re about
LJM - London Jazz Meetup - is for jazz lovers, musicians and artists, jazz venues and promoters to share their love of jazz and live music in all its varied forms: from swing to be-bop, acid jazz to and all forms of contemporary jazz fusion.
The aim of LJM is two-fold. To provide an open forum for jazz lovers to meet and enjoy music together in a range of venues across the city. LJM also wants to play a part in supporting jazz artists in London.
As a member of LJM, you find out about the wide range of jazz on offer in London, from young bands starting their career to iconic jazz musicians passing through town, including a well of London based artists dedicated to playing great music. You start going to amazing gigs with likeminded people.
If you are a jazz musician, artist, promoter or venue, you are welcome to list your gigs on the LJM calendar.
Listing gigs on LJM is free, it gives your event great visibility to a large group of jazz lovers. In return we ask that you arrange for a clearly signposted reserved space for LJM members who attend your gig. This is to ensure that LJM members can gather and socialise together. Please ask me for more details about how to list and host your event on LJM.
So introduce yourself and share why you joined. And if you see a gig that you’d like to go to and it is not on the calendar, you can post a message on LJM to see who’s interested in going. If there are a few, you can become an event host for the night.
By becoming a member you confirm that you have read, understood and agree with LJM group rules below.
Thanks, Ivy
LJM GROUP RULES
LJM is an inclusive group, we expect our members to feel safe when they attend LJM events. Please be respectful and considerate of all LJM members.
LJM is a not-for-profit group. However, we ask for a one-off £5 contribution when you become a member, payable through PayPal to [email protected]. Membership is free thereafter. This covers the Meetup annual subscription.
How to join an event?
Signing up to an event is entirely free of charge for LJM members.
As an LJM member, it is your responsibility to purchase your own ticket for the performance, your own travel and pub expenses.
Please be considerate and respectful of event hosts. They volunteer their time and energy to organise events and make everyone feel welcome. Please make it your responsibility too.
Although we provide detailed information, if you have any questions, please post them on the event chat.
It is your responsibility to find and arrive at the meeting place on time if you want to enjoy the gig with other LJM members.
If you are late, please notify the event host. However it is up to the event host how long the group can wait for you.
Please only RSVP that you are attending an event, once you have bought a ticket for the performance.
Please amend your RSVP to “not attending” if for any last minute reason you are unable to attend the event. It is important for the event host to have an accurate number of people attending the event, so they don’t have to wait unnecessarily.
Please have a face shot of yourself on your profile. Failure to do so may lead to removal from LJM.
Please contribute in any way you can, by sharing your ideas or making suggestions. Why not even organise an event once in a while? You have a choice to become a one-off or a regular 'event host'.

See all- Orlando Le Fleming @ World Heart Beat, Nine Elms #LJFWorld Heart Beat Embassy Gardens, London
It's London Jazz Festival time - always the busiest time of the year for the Meetup. I'm proposing to go to this Saturday night gig at the excellent World Heart Beat in Nine Elms (seven minutes from Nine Elms tube) to see an artist I haven't seen before, but who sounds promising (I'm always up for bass-led fusion/funk bands).
Orlando Le Fleming apparently plays "high intensity jazz fusion", which ticks my boxes, and he's on tour promoting his 'Romantic Funk' new album - there's plenty of his playing on YouTube to check out. The support act from 1930h will be Asa Martinson, a jazz pianist and band leader.
More details on booking (seats £20) on the World Heart Beat website.
There seem to be some tickets still available, but as it's a Saturday night gig at the Festival, do not be surprised if it sells out.
Would be great to see other members there (and perhaps go for a quick chat/drink nearby afterwards). No reserved seating, so if we want to sit together, we'll need to go in together. Please only sign up if you have or intend to purchase a ticket. My mobile is 07740 038913 if you can't find the group.
- [EDF LJF] Neil Cowley Trio @ Earth, Stoke NewingtonEartH (Evolutionary Arts Hackney), London
After seven years - and some solo albums - the mighty Neil Cowley Trio is back at the London Jazz Festival - members are invited to join me.
Sure, it's a good number of months away, but I suspect this will be a sellout gig, so if you leave it to the last minute, I suspect you won't get a ticket.
We did a good number of years back, maybe even ten, a great meetup to see the trio live at KoKo in Camden (and later, one at the Union Chapel); but here, with a new album 'Entity' to play, this power jazz/rock piano trio - who have to be heard to be believed - are playing at a venue I've not been too, as part of the festival.
They're not a standard jazz trio - Cowley's all about layering and finessing slabs of piano riffs rather than exploring John Coltrane levels of complexity - although he can - and most of the existing hits they've had on multiple albums are catchy as hell, or mournful and thought provoking. Performances are usually pretty dazzling and 'event like', certainly for a jazz piano trio, and much of that is down to Cowley's personality and playing.
Ticket information is here. General admission tickets (so, I'm assuming, it's standing) are £27 all in, which for a festival gig, is reasonable enough I think. Please only RSVP is you have purchased, or are in the process of purchasing, a ticket.
I'll post up more information nearer the time of where and when we can meet.
