The Berkhampsted circular is a fast paced hilly hike over 16 miles. If you think you will struggle with this please change your RSVP to no. There are plenty of other good hiking groups such as London explorers and Chiltern explorers who do slower paced hikes.

Berkhampsted is a historic market town encircled by the Chiltern hills which is an area of natural beauty (AONB). At the start and end of the hike we will pass the Berkhampsted castle where you can see the substantial remains of a strong and important castle dating from the 11th century.

The route will follow a section of the rolling Chiltern hills and woodlands before following a section of the Grand Union canal and heading up to the Ridgeway, offering expansive countryside views and onto the Ivanhoe Beacon, which was an ancient signal point used to send messages long distances. The second half of the hike passes through peaceful woodlands.

There is a train leaving London Euston at 0924 arriving at Berkhampsted at 0955. The hike will start from Berkhampsted train station at 1005.

We will stop for a late lunch at Ashridge Monument cafe which has a wide range of snacks and beverages.

At the end of the hike there will be optional drinks at the Crown pub which is in an 16th century building and has a wide range of refreshing beverages. There will be a voluntary 8 pound charge on the day payable with cash or via PayPal at London1000fthiking@yahoo.com

What to bring: Suitable hiking boots and hiking gear, waterproof clothes are advisable, lunch, water and good vibes
