We'll be skipping the November meetup, since it would be too close to Thanksgiving for people to be able to attend or make time to read. And it's inching up on that time of year again! The Jolabokaflod event last year was hugely successful (if you ignore the waitstaff being traumatized) and it seemed to be enjoyed by everyone that participated. Last year was a yankee swap style, so we'll draw numbers once we're there. I've copied and pasted the description from last year's event:
In Iceland, the tradition of “Jolabokaflod” is gifting somebody a book that they will read on Christmas Eve whilst imbibing hot chocolate. It sounds like the best holiday tradition that mankind has ever created, and I’m going to be forever peeved that it hasn’t gained similar popularity in the US. That being said, in order to bring Jolabokaflod to our own magical Cape shores, participating in this month’s meetup requires actual preparation!
Come armed with a book and chocolate! This should not be a dog-earned book that you snag from the swap shop last minute because you forgot one, nor should this be the melted/re-solidified chocolate bar at the bottom of your purse. This is meant to be a gift, so choose wisely!
The way I see this as going most successfully is that you come armed with the book that you feel is the best gift for someone and some sort of chocolate something, but wrap it up! And super duper important PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE note in the RSVP section if you have a nut allergy or something of equal severity that would impact your chocolate!
