Friends,
Here's the plan: let's meet at Olde Salem (in Salem) 7p Monday night, November 18th.
The next couple months, we'll work through How God Became King by Tom Wright (which you can find here.) For this first pub night, plan to read part 2: "Adjusting the Volume."
Obviously feel free to go for part 1 too if you have spare time. It lays out the problem Wright wants to solve in the rest of the book: the disappearance of much of the earliest biographies of Jesus - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - from mainstream Christian teaching in favor of an exclusive emphasis on the beginning (Christmas/incarnation) and end (Good Friday/atonement & Easter/victory over death) of the story.
Starting in part 2, he sets out to tell this fourfold story about Jesus, drawing out how it brings the story of Israel (= the Old Testament) to its climax and ushers in the Kingdom of God. Then it sounds like in part 3, he works out how this kingdom-centered story relates to the death and resurrection of Jesus.
I haven't read Wright in a while and am really enjoying this book so far. I think you will too. See you soon!
Blessings
Phil
