Details

Hosted by the FTI Stoa, this month we will explore the Stoic concept of the "Discipline of Assent," which centers on how we can align our judgments with virtue and reason. While the Discipline of Action guides our external behaviors, the Discipline of Assent focuses on our internal responses, shaping how we perceive and react to the world to foster a life founded on wisdom and integrity.

The Stoics believed that true wisdom stems from our ability to judge rightly, rather than from external successes like status or possessions. This discipline encourages us to critically assess our impressions and to decide if our responses align with the core Stoic virtues of wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance.

During this session, we'll examine how to refine our judgments with these virtues in mind, focusing on responses that enhance our long-term well-being and that of others. Stoicism teaches us that although we cannot control external events, we can govern our perceptions and decisions. By concentrating on our realm of influence, we can lead a life of meaningful wisdom.

We’ll be using A Handbook for New Stoics by Massimo Pigliucci and Greg Lopez to guide our discussion and illustrate how these principles can be applied in everyday life.
