Let's meet somewhere for an ice cream or coffee after lunch, and I will do a 15 minute class on this topic so you have an idea as to what's up. It would be nice to car pool and plus it is more social that way. We won't wander far, no more than a few miles in the local area.
Wear STURDY sneakers or hiking shoes, long pants and shirt you don't care much about, and a hat. Bring a little water and a postive attitude!
Please bring: Your phone with the app loaded, a handful of little trinkets (go through your junk drawer or hit the local thrift shop), and a pen. If not everyone wants to load the app on their phone we can share.
If you think you may want to take this up as a hobby, please create an account on geocaching.com so you can log the caches as we find them.
Geocaching is the ideal hobby! It is fun, simple, inexpensive (free or or $30/ year for premium membership), and anyone can do it, any age and any fitness level, almost anywhere. If you are within 7 feet of a spider you are also likely within 520 feet of a geocache! The geo puzzles take some intellect, and some caches are hard to find, but mostly it is just plain fun.
What is geocaching? It is a "world- wide treasure hunt!" There is an app, found in the playstore, that works with the GPS in your phone. The map shows where all the containers are hidden. Tap on the circle on the map and the cache pops up with details and coordinates to lead you. Once at the geocache zone (GZ), you hunt for the hidden container. There may be a hint on the cach's web page on the app. If/when you find it, you sign the log inside and then log it to your account on the app. The container will contain little trinkets that you may take and leave another trinket of roughly equal value in its place. Then we just hide the container again in the same place we found it so the next geocacher can find it.
There is also geo art, trackables that jump from cache to cache, caches that teach a geologic lesson, cache-in trash-out (CITO) and meet-and- greet events and many more fun aspects to this versatile hobby.
See the Crossroads at Silverbell Park event on Dec 6 if you want to try a CITO event.
