Festive Rochester
Details
Historic Rochester is bursting with charm and stories, and it’s no wonder Charles Dickens loved this place so much! He grew up in the area and often wrote about it in his novels, and you’ll see why when you visit.
The city’s history goes back centuries, and there’s plenty to explore. Start with the stunning Rochester Cathedral, which has been standing tall since 604 – making it the second oldest cathedral in England.
Then, there is Rochester Castle where you can take in the breathtaking views from the top of its keep – one of the tallest in the country! Perched on the highest point of Rochester’s Roman city wall, the castle was built to protect the River Medway crossing, and it’s still as magnificent as ever.
With so much history, character, and charm packed into one little city, it’s a day out you won’t want to miss!
Set in the spectacular Rochester Castle gardens, the Christmas markets are said to be spectacular. It's the ideal place to search for that special gift and stocking fillers by wandering around the many craft and trade stalls.
Now in its 15th year, this well established, authentic Christmas experience has a large loyal customer base who come for the atmosphere, entertainment, and Christmas shopping experience.
The Christmas market is the largest in the South and includes:
Over 100 stalls (with extended trading hours for 2024)
A children's funfair
A Bavarian food village (which has been extended for 2024!)
Live music performances
A children's Christmas village.
Food and drink stalls are available to purchase hot and cold beverages, mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and much more.

I’ll be leaving from Welwyn North on the 0916 into Kings Cross, walking across the road to St Pancras, and catching the 1020 train to Rochester, arriving at 1057. So can happily meet attendees along the route, or at Rochester Station. When you sign up to come along just let me know where you’d like to meet the group.

Let’s kick things off the right way – with coffee and cake on arrival! 🍰☕ It’s the perfect chance to get to know each other, have a chat, and start the day with a little sugar boost. And yes, cake will absolutely be a theme for all future events!
Next up, we’ll head to the iconic Rochester Castle. We’ll wander through its ancient halls, climb the tower for stunning views over the town and river, and soak in the fascinating history of one of England’s best-preserved Norman castles. We’ll spend around 1.5 hours exploring, giving everyone plenty of time to take it all in.
After the castle, we’ll head to one of Rochester’s quaint cafes or pubs for a relaxed late lunch or maybe just a festive snack and a warm drink to recharge. Perfect for keeping the energy levels up for the rest of the day!
Then it’s off to the Christmas Market. Time to browse the charming stalls filled with handmade gifts, festive foods, and twinkly decorations. We’ll take our time soaking in the atmosphere, with no doubt the sound of carollers and the scent of mulled wine filling the air.
As the evening rolls in, we’ll take a short stroll to the beautiful Rochester Cathedral. Its stunning architecture and serene vibe are just magical at this time of year, and it’s the perfect way to wind down after all the bustle of the market.
Finally, we’ll wrap up the day with festive drinks – and maybe even dinner – for those who don’t need to rush off. A cozy, relaxed end to what promises to be a fantastic day out!
