Exploring Fort Scratchley: Newcastle

Details

Join me to explore the rich history of Fort Scratchley built on the headland at Newcastle East in 1882 to defend Newcastle against a possible Russian attack. Enjoy the stunning 360 degree views to Nobbys lighthouse, the beaches, estuary and the city. We’ll meet one of the Historical Society volunteers at the gate for maps and guidance on the places to be discovered, including the Parade and Ceremony Grounds, galleries and museum collections, and the historic gun emplacements.

Bring along something for a picnic afternoon tea or the shop has ice creams and drinks. If it’s wet weather we’ll have afternoon tea on the veranda of the historic barracks with a birds eye view of shipping in the harbour.
This is a family friendly event.

Agenda
I’ll meet you outside the main gate at 1.30pm.
Entry is free. A donation to the Historical Society would be welcome.

We won’t be doing the Tunnel Tour but if you’d like to explore underground you can visit the shop to make a booking for a time that suits you.
