This is my favorite hike in one of my favorite EBRPD parks. We start out on Indian Joe Creek Trail and head way up into the hills on Cerro Este and Vista Grande Roads before descending down Backpack to Little Yosemite and Canyon View. The forecast is for the low 60s and mostly sunny - perfect weather for hiking!

We will leave PROMPTLY at the start time after a Meet and Greet. We should be finished hiking no later than 1:30pm. If you run into trouble the morning of the hike, you can try to reach me at 510-390-5817, but many staging areas have poor cell service, and I am likely to be unreachable 30 minutes prior to the hike. There is no cell service in this park.

WHAT TO BRING: Sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water, sunscreen, hat, snacks or lunch (well stop for a break at Little Yosemite). Hiking poles are recommended.

HIKE RATING: challenging, 9 miles; 1900 ft if climbing

HIKING PACE: 2.5 - 3 mph. If you don’t have recent experience accomplishing a hike of this distance and difficulty and at this pace, please consider joining us another time. It is recommended that you obtain a map at the beginning of the hike in case the group is separated.

DOGS: YES! off-leash (If you’re planning to allow your dog off-leash, the dog must have excellent recall and not get in the way of other hikers. Dogs must always be on-leash in Staging Areas and if cattle are present)

FYI: You must keep your dog close to you in this park. The cattle in Sunol are VERY hostile to dogs. There are also a lot of ground squirrels, and your dog may not chase them or any other wildlife.

BATHROOMS: At the staging area and at Little Yosemite (and the faciliTREES)

GRAZING ANIMALS & WILDLIFE: Cows with calves and ground squirrels are plentiful in this park.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From the Oakland-Berkeley area, drive east on I-580 to the junction with I-680. Take I-680 south and exit at Calaveras Road/Highway 84 just south of the Sunol exit. At the bottom of the exit turn left onto Calaveras Road and proceed about four miles to a left turn onto Geary Road, which leads directly into the park.

As always, it is good practice to confirm the night before that any app you use takes you to where you expect by comparing the destination with what is posted above on your PC/Mac. Most street addresses provided are approximate.

NO SHOWS: If you sign up for an event but do not show up, you may be removed from subsequent events in favor of someone on the waitlist. Repeated last-minute RSVP changes to “no” are as good as no-shows.

WAITING LIST PRIORITY: People who hike with the group regularly will be given priority when they are on the waiting list.

EARLY DEPARTURE: If you decide to leave a hike early, you must inform the group leader.
