Neighborhood Gem Series: Join us at Marib and discover Yemeni Susi!

Welcome to our NEIGHBORHOOD GEMS series featuring emblematic meals from around the world. This series shines a light on local restaurants and is designed to bring together inquisitive foodies and dishes that are unique and oh so worth a trip on roads less traveled!

Washingtonian:

A meal at Marib is all about delicious discovery for anyone new to Yemeni food, though one item will seem familiar to diners from across the globe: susi, an ultra-comforting casserole that tastes just like French toast. The shareable dish can lean more savory or sweet, depending on whether you drizzle honey on top. It’s served in the family-run restaurant at lunch and dinner as a bready complement to the slow-roasted meats, though it’s available at breakfast by request.

You can also familiarize yourself with haneeth, fall-off-the-bone lamb served over fragrant rice, and shafout, a pomegranate-studded yogurt dish with spongy bread. Like IHOP, Marib serves breakfast all day, which translates to flash-fried lamb livers and egg preparations.

Also great: Mathloothah, a 3-layered dish with rice, creamy wheat-based porridge & flatbread crowned with fried onions & haneeth (spice-rubbed lamb); hummus with lamb; lamb mandi; fahsa (beef or lamb stew); saltah (vegetable stew); bint assahn (a layered pastry).
