Book summary: Peter Houghton, a 17-year-old high schooler who has been bullied for years, kills 10 people and wounds many others in a mass shooting at Sterling High School in New Hampshire. The shooting turns the small town upside down. The judge assigned to Peter's case is Alex Cormier, who is also the mother of one of the surviving witnesses, Josie Cormier. Alex struggles to maintain objectivity while also trying to understand Josie.
