What we’re about

Many Meetup groups have a rule that talking about politics and religion is not allowed. I understand why, but I also consider the cost if we don't talk. I believe that any force against free speech that sows division among its people can only have a nefarious motivation, by definition. I trust people to be able to handle their own emotions and to show respect for the values and beliefs of others. Members in this group attend at their own risk and even if they leave offended will not hold others liable for any reason.

My theory is that people with very differing opinions and from varying backgrounds can communicate in a peaceful and productive way. They just have to follow some simple rules:

Talk about your values.
Talk about what you believe.
Talk about IDEAS.
Talk about WHY you said what you said.
Leave most of your opinions at the door.

In order to make the events manageable and fun, we will follow these guidelines, the same ones you learned in kindergarten:

1. Use your words.
2. Wait your turn.
3. Don't interrupt.
4. Tell the truth.
5. Don't call other people bad names.
6. No hitting, biting, scratching or throwing things.
7. Try really hard not raise your voice or scream.
8. Time out chair for bad behavior.

I am still figuring out how to conduct the events. If there is enough attendance we may have a timer, an observer and a fact checker in addition to the speakers. We'll figure it out as we go and I will need input from members.

I had been going back and forth in my mind about creating this group for some time, but was hesitant for obvious reasons. But I am going to give it a try anyway because of my life motto: "Be BRAVE: this is not a dress rehearsal." So I hope members will be brave too, and I hope we get some members that might wear red, some that might wear blue, or even white (independent). A mix of people will make for a richer outcome. And maybe we will eventually be able to answer the question, can we talk?
