Start the New Year 2025 with a dose of fresh air in your lungs at Wapsipinicon State Park! :)

We will meet at the Hale Bridge parking lot at 900am then proceed into the park via the "backdoor" to the park, the Hale Bridge.
Bathrooms (pit style - no indoor plumbing) may not be open. Be prepared.

Hike should be considered moderate w/hills about 3-4 miles in length as a loop (not out and back) hike.

NOTE: Please review the Discussions in Iowa Odysseys for appropriate gear for a snow hike. Definitely have a rain shell jacket. Rain pants, optional, but highly recommended. Please also review the About tab.

Btw, the interior park roads will be closed for the winter season.

No tennis shoes, no flip flops or sandals allowed for your safety. Insulated winter boots ("shin high" ideal) required for your safety. (Theisens is, btw, a good source for inexpensive insulated boots and has boots on sale)

Hiking/ski poles highly recommended. Poles can be rented from organizer for $5 for the event. I also have one extra set of rain gear (jacket and rain pants) that can be rented for $10.

Bonuses should include relative solitude, wildlife sightings esp eagles!

Binoculars/cameras w/good telephoto lens highly recommended.

It is recommended that you have a second dry set of clothes (left in car) that you could change into at a convenience store two miles away from Hale Bridge.

I will be bringing some warm buckwheat blueberry pancakes complete with real maple syrup and butter as pre-hike "fuel" :).

Weather will dictate the event. If there is a blizzard, temps below 0 degrees F, etc, event will be cancelled in interest of safety. Also, if there is "better" snow (deeper :) ) at another park, location may be switched to the other park (w/update done to description and location for event.

There will be an option for a meal in Anamosa after the hike/snowshoe.
