## Crater Lake Rim Backpack Snowshoe (Oregon)

**Note:** This event will only take place if long range conditions are looking safe & sound. Perhaps a week before departure for the final call. Also, this will be a small group of 6 or less to ensure a successful outcome. May try to fit in this hot springs (Umqua) afterwards if time permits on the return which seems to be along the way out of the area. https://gowanderwild.com/umpqua-hot-springs/

**Those with a history of canceling late or "No Showing" will not be considered.**

**(THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER EVENT. DO NOT OVER-ESTIMATE YOUR ABILITIES PLEASE).**

Been to the area in the summer once before doing day hikes and "Riding the Rim" cycling event in September both of which were terrific just a few years back. This time the winter version for a totally new perspective Easter Long weekend. This is typically done in 3 to 5 days between March and April basically following the rim road in a loop configuration.

**Distance:** 31 miles or 53 kilometers (non-technical)
**Elevation profile:** 4124 plus feet gained.

**A very basic Itinerary for now:**
Day 1 drive close to Crater Lake National Park to overnight nearby so as to be ready early enough for grabbing permits the next morning.
Day 2 to 3 or 4 day Get permits 10am begin snowshoe and snow camp in two spots hopefully along the way. Depending on conditions.
Day 5 if needed we will hit the highway for the long drive back to Canada eh!

Permits: No cost apparently
There is a $15-per-car entrance fee, which is valid for 7 consecutive days

**Items to bring:**
-Complete winter sleeping system
-Tent 3 (season will do to)
-Snowshoes
-Trekking poles
-Winter gloves/secondary pair
-Nalgene bottles (hoses may freeze)
-Hot food, fluids, snacks, favorite beverages. (;
-Sunglasses/Sunscreen/Lip balm
-Head wear ie: toque/hat/scarf.
-Good waterproof hiking boots/Extra socks
-Camera/binoculars.
-Plenty of layers ie: parka, shell, down, merino wool, etc.
-Headlamps or other light sources. (mandatory)
-Microspikes
-Shovel
-A happy face (: (Also mandatory)

**Suggestions:**
Nalgene to make a hot water bottle for night time.
Dry clothes to change into after hike.
A set of dry clothes & socks for sleeping.
Touque & gloves for sleeping.
Warm coat to use - After Hike.
Your backpacking tent is probably fine for this trip - just need to vent it properly, have a proper footprint and rain fly. Deadman your pegs.
Most of the gear you already have is sufficient if used correctly, were just adding colder and snowier weather.
