Coyote Valley Dam
Details
By general agreement, we will start at the dam at 11am and hike to the spillway, a lollipop loop. The distance is about 3.8 miles.
Most hike about about 2.5 mph. We're pretty easy-going with some turning early & taking shorter loops. We all like having the meetup that brings us out hiking. There are several benches along the way for some to sit and rest.
The following is an interesting webpage with the history and purpose of the reservoir.
SF District - Lake Mendocino
We usually start walking on time. With the sign-ups, we have an idea of who to expect might wait 5 minutes. There are poison oak plants along the trail that have already lost their leaves. The dirt in winter is very slippery. Some wear tread and some use hiking poles (extra workout on the biceps/triceps, as well as good stability).
Last spring, we saw a rattlesnake on the south side of the lake. A few years back, we heard pig. Again, poison oak lines the trail, wear long pants & long shirts, if susceptible. Always we look out for bird life. We started walking here as a meetup in 2015. Come join us. It's been fun making new friends and seeing old friends on our walk. There's lot of talking, and also a lot of quiet walking. We're pretty easy-going and like it all!
