Surrounded by some of the most idyllic locations in the Lake District, YHA Buttermere could not be better located to exploit high and low level walks in a stunning location.
The imposing house itself is quite amazing as well. Built as a hotel in Victorian times by a then well known historian and author who had written books about local resistance to the Normans in the 12th Century, it became a YHA in 1956 but remains much grander than most other hostel venues we stay in. You can't fail to be impressed!
The walking is very impressive too, with such stunning targets as Pillar, Haystacks, Robinson, High Crag, High Style, Fleetwith Pike, Red Pike, Dale Head etc etc all from straight out of the front door. But also with pleasant lakeside walks for those with a less ambitious agenda. Buttermere has it all!
There is even a "pub" too on this occasion and a farm tea shop so the spot is absolute magic and an opportunity not to be missed.
Friday arrival at our accommodation is from anytime after 6pm but we will lay on a bonus walk for those who can arrive in the area for likely 10:30am to ensure we make the best of the day.
We shall be rustling up a delicious hot meal for Friday night with vegetarian option and poached salmon alternative so no need to eat on the way and although we'll serve up about 8pm, there'll be plenty kept for those arriving a little later. If you require a bevy or three don't forget to bring this with you as it's a long way to the offy!
Help yourself breakfasts and lunch packups are provided as is hot food Friday and Saturdays night but feel free to bring desserts, cakes and other goodies to share as well as your own drinks. Tea and coffee will be provided.
Accommodation is single sex bunk rooms of a variety of sizes with full bedding provided but not towels.
Saturday and Sunday routes will be discussed with everyone on arrival to ensure we are meeting overall expectations but on this weekend there are many routes we could choose which involve steep rocky ascents with some scrambling in places, just what we like! There are plenty of easier routes as well.
If choosing to travel by public transport the nearest mainline stations are Kendall, Penrith or Windermere and we could pick you up from one of those by prior arrangement. There is also a regular bus service from Keswick.
Accommodation is single sex bunk rooms of a variety of sizes with full bedding provided but not towels.
