Eagle Traps: Bandelier

Eagle Traps is an easy/moderate 4.5 mile round trip, on good trail and cross country. The first part is on Burnt Messa trail for about 1 mile. Then cross country for about 1 ¼ miles. We return the same way. The total elevation change is 366 ft. The pace will be slow (especially cross country). Allow at least four hours + drive time. It will be necessary for the group to stay together because the terrain is confusing, and one could easily get lost.
The Eagle Traps are on the tip of a promontory overlooking the upper Frijoles canyon. The traps consist of two holes about four feet apart, big enough for a man to hide in. A rabbit would be tied between the two holes and when an eagle came to get the rabbit the Indians would jump out, catch the eagle, and pullout some tail feathers.
Guest leader Bill Cooper will be showing us the way.
