Meet us at the Mohawk for some food, a beer, camaraderie, and the goal to tackle Moby Dick together. Please come even if you “haven’t finished your homework.”

For the Initial meeting on Nov. 11, we (all?) read “In the Heart of the Sea,” by Nathaniel Philbrick, which is a true story about a whale ship out of Nantucket which had a harrowing encounter with a sperm whale. Importantly, it gives lots of background on the setting, the emotionality, and the motivations of the people of the book Moby Dick (I assume). This true story, which was as well-known then as the Titanic is to us today, inspired Melville to write Moby Dick.

I am going to post notes that I took while reading “In the Heart of the Sea” which hopefully will provide you with useful background to Moby Dick in case you were unable to read it.

For our second meeting, we are diving into Moby Dick for the first time ￼and will hopefully all have read the first 27 chapters. If you haven’t caught up come anyway.
