- Meteors, Valley Of Fire, Red Rock Cyn for a 3-day weekend- Camping-hikes & morerr Location is approximate. Location ONLY for Attendees. Camping for Red Rock/Valley Of Fire, Las Vegas, NV
Indefinite postpone of this event for now.
So we move the date for the Free Camping with Volunteer to the Start Of The Season. Same deal . . . . Event is on ONLY if snow permits.
FREE CAMPING for VOLUNTEERING w/ breakfast, lunch and dinner on FRI included.
This is a different kind of event.
It's a fair trade. You get to camp at a fab site right at the trail-head to the Big Pine Lakes. The trade is that on Fri you put in some good volunteering. And in exchange you get some free food, some exercise, some community, AND you get to do some good
Here are the details. You will get free camping in return for putting in eight hours of volunteering on Friday. Friday/Volunteer Day will also include breakfast, lunch and BBQ dinner.
Want to go? You need to fill out the form
Here are the finer details.
Thurs : Arrive anytime you wish. Even at late as 1AM
Fri Volunteer Work Day
Sat : Hike Day, Play Day, Fun Day
Sun : Pack up and head homeThe Breakfast/Lunch/BBQ Dinner Is provided ONLY Friday Volunteer Day
WAIT . . . . I forgot to ask . . . What kind of work is this? What do I need to bring for it?
The camp is vintage. Painting . . . Moving some smaller rocks and re-building some smaller rock walls. There be a little bit of moving some gravel to fill some road holes.
Pretty much . . . the kind of stuff that many hands make light work.Bring with you some leather work gloves. If you have a wagon that don't mind getting some use . . . bring that too. A dust mask is nice to keep from sandy dust that gets kicked up. But then again . . .at the moment many of us have many masks on hand.
Ok. I am fine with bringing some leather gloves. What else do I need?
All the regular stuff you need for average tent camping. Tent, Sleeping bag, Sleeping pad (yoga mat), clothes/layers, cooking gear, food, fire-wood, etc . . . and all the other etcetera's.
Got questions?
Can I bring my dog? (yes)
Can they go on the trail hiking. (yes)I think this is great, but can't make it!
Or whatever your comment or question is . . .This is NOT a first-timer or beginner event. It will be rather cold as it is early in the season.
AND/OR if you have questions?
For Marc (screen name Oddie) Direct Message

If you have not heard of either . . . that's because they are outside of California. We have so much here that we often can overlook what is right next-door and still super close.
The other reason you may not of heard of them . . . Valley of Fire is a Nevada State Park and not a National Park. State Parks are assumed to not be as good as National Parks.
Red Rock is a National Conservation Area . . . again . . . assumed to not be as good since not designated as National Park. The reality is BOTH are stunning. And the designations make them more accessible.
Valley Of Fire has "The Fire Wave." Similar "The Wave" in UT.
This event is tent camping (not RV or Van). You do need to provide your own gear and food. (more on that down below). We are staying outside of Red Rock on a private non-federal, non-blm site.
The general itinerary/ schedule is:
Fri-
Arrive when you can. Anytime AFTER 2PM. People will be arriving up to midnight. I will be away to greet you and show you where to go. Along with whoever else is at the campfire at that time.Sat- Valley Of Fire - - This is the main fun.
- Drive Mouse’s Tank Road towards Fire Wave and take lots of photos along the way.
- Now to our "main hike." We will get there early before the crowds. We will do a loop of four hikes together. Fire Wave, Pink Pastel Slot Cyn, Domes Slot, White Domes. They call it the 7 wonders loop. I do not know what the other three wonders are.
- After that we make it to Fire Cyn Vista (this is a view only)
- Then two short hikes of Rainbow Vista trail (this has natural arches)
- & Mouse's Tank trial. This has 2000 year old petroglyphs all along the cyn walls.
- A quick zip to Atlatl Rock (more petroglyphs)
- And lastly visit the Beehives and take tons more pix there.
- Elephant Rock is also an option to drive to.
- Get back to camp and we have a fab campfire all nite.
- Dec 21st is the peak of the Ursids Meteor Shower. We have a show instore for us in the dark desert skies.
Sunday Schedule will be Red Rock Cyn.
- Easy vista points and views
- Medium (two or three smaller hikes)
- Hard hike (for the hardcore among us.
- We will break to groups accordingly by who wants to do what.
- Get back to camp and we have a fab campfire all nite.
Monday: Head home.
- For those only staying Sat & Sun eve. Simply pack up Sun AM and do Red Rock with us and then continue home.
Time of year:
BOTH Valley of Fire and Red Rock Nat Rec Area are MISERABLE in summer.
Daytime high will get up to 70 degrees. Perfect for hikes. Nighttime low will get to around 45 degrees. Just bring some extra blankets and you will fine.Another benefit of the time of year is Christmas is the 24th/25th. Many folks can take Monday 23rd off super easy to make it a 3 day weekend.

- Galapagos Islands Expedition--Untouched Nature in all its Splendor! Small GroupLos Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles, CA
It's a Meetup . . . in the Galápagos!!
This Meetup Event is for the nature lovers, for the curious explorers and the adventurers who want to experience nature in all its splendor & diversity.
The Galápagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, considered one of the world's foremost destinations for wildlife-viewing. It's a place where lizards swim, birds walk, and humans — for once — don't take center stage. In 1835 a 26-year-old Charles Darwin introduced the Galápagos Islands to the world with his theory of evolution.
As amazing as you think the Galápagos Islands would be, they exceed all expectations of our group in 2023! That sea lion above in our group photo is not a prop! It was very real, ready to play and pose for a picture. You can see sea lions, giant lizards and many other exotic and friendly creatures, waddling on the streets, playing in the sand or just chilling (sun bathing) on a bench!
We will explore and experience:
- The famous Galapagos penguin and blue footed boobies. Swim with sea turtles and sea lions.
- Tortuga Bay Beach for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking or surfing with unique marine life.
- Get close and personal with the giant tortoises roaming in their natural habitat
- Explore the Tintoreras islet, home of the white tip sharks and its shark tunnel.
- Visit the Charles Darwin Station, to observe giant tortoises and their babies and learn about this majestic animal.
- Snorkeling around the shore of the Tijeretas Bay
- Boat ride to Kicker Rock with snorkeling
- Sailing to Santa Cruz Island.
- Sail to Isabela Island, the largest of the archipelago.
- Boat tour to Tuneles De Cabo Rosa, a formation of series of above ocean arches, creating an unique snorkeling experience.
- Explore cavernous underground Lava Tunnels.
- Tour the Galapagos rainforest habitat
- San Cristobal Island with visit to the Interpretation Center
- Visit to Los Gemelos, a haven for bird watchers!
- Visit Sierra Negra and Chico Volcano. A 10-mile challenging hike (for those who are interested)
- El Trapiche to see the old methods of extracting cane juice, roasting coffee beans and techniques of distillery.
- Quito with a full day tour and visit to the Equator line
- Visit to the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.

- Poppy Bloom in Antelope Valley. AND Hockney, Llano and Devil's Punchbowl201 S Front St, Burbank, CA
The bloom for 2024 is not ready yet. AND . .. I am not available to lead a Poppies Road Trip past the weekend of 4-13
The weekend of 4-13 is projected as rain and cold. Not good for causing blooms. Needs to be dry and warmer.
Carrizo Pain will be Rain.
Lancaster . . . they have just not bloomed.I did ask if a group member was willing to be lead in my place. I have had no takers. As such this event is being moved to next year.
We will try again then.If you have never been here before . . . it worth seeing.
If you have been before . . . it's time to revisit.
Let's get to the event date first . . . The poppies bloom anywhere from Feb to May.
At the moment we are aiming for April 14th
https://ktla.com/news/california/southern-california-poised-for-another-wildflower-superbloom/amp/Or https://www.desertusa.com/wildflo/wildupdates.html
We'll walk some or most of the 8 miles of trails--not all of it.
Each spring, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve comes alive with the seasonal surprises of the Mojave Desert Grassland habitat. The duration and intensity of colors and scents vary from year to year. The wildflower season generally lasts from as early as mid-February through late May,
Parking Fees

Dogs are NOT allowed on trails or in the visitor center (just like any California Sate Park)
Whether you most enjoy expansive fields or the close-up study of a single flower, this is the place to visit.
Location - Directions The Reserve is located 15 miles west of Lancaster at 15101 Lancaster Road.
From Highway 14: Take the Avenue I exit and head west 15 miles. Avenue I becomes Lancaster Road.
From I-5: Take Hwy 138 east and turn right on 170th Street West. Make a left at the end, onto Lancaster Road. Follow the road two miles.
Carpool? YES!!!!
We will meet at the meet time and address. That location is a designated Park & Ride. It is a free lot that has roving security in the area. So it's safe to leave your car for the day.
We meet and then re-shuffle to then pool and caravan to the Poppies.
Why this location as meet-point? It's rather central. And just off the 5 . . . the main freeway we need to take to get there.
Carpool to our meetpoint? Sure. Post in the comments on the main group posting.
This is a free hiking event that take a little more work to make happen than a quickie local thing. This is not local in-town. As such you will drive to and meet there. OR you will use the carpool info sent a week before to work on setting up a carpool.
To attend this event:
- RSVP on this event (then)
- Click Here and fill out our Attendees google form

- Everest Base Camp Yoga Trek. Discover the land & people. An intimate AdventureLos Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles, CA
This is definitely a bucket list type of trip. It embodies adventure and the romance of traveling to far off places. It is also tempered with safety and do-ability.
The actual dates are Apr 25-May 11, 2025 and the trip is 17 days/16 nights. We have done this adventure twice already, in 2021 and 2022, and everybody had a blast! CLICK HERE to see attendee photos of the EBC trek
WE HAVE MADE CHANGES BASED UPON EXPERIENCE.
- We are ADDING Yoga and Meditation, and a local expert TO BE WITH US to guide in Buddhist practice and local culture.
- We are ADDING two days while going up to better acclimatize.
- We are ADDING a HELLICOPTER FLIGHT from our highest camp back to start point AND REMOVING two days going down by taking the flight.
To clarify. We are NOT going up to the top of Everest (29,000’)
We are going to Everest Base Camp at 17,600’
Our starting elevation will be in Lukla at 9,400’You need to be of average or better fitness. If you can manage walking 3-6 hours a day, up and down a hill while carrying a light daypack, you will be OK! If you are very fit and work out and train, you will be at the front.
Professional guides to lead, and Yaks to carry our gear are included. And a Yak Herder too!!
All that is left for us to carry is our water, snacks and camera.
But I don't have the needed gear?!
Sleeping bag and parka, rated to -10C are provided and walking poles too!Does this include food?
All meals on the trek potion are included. What is lodging like?
We are sleeping in a series of "Tea Houses" along the route. You will have a bed in a shared room with roommate (from the group). Sorry, a solo room will not be available on this trip. We will pair up everybody. How dangerous is this? What if I get sick or hurt?
This is NOT the summiting Everest with people dying from bad choices. We will be walking on an established, well used trail the entire time, and NOT on snow or ice. Stats from past years show that 30,000 people a year do the EBC Trek. With all that said, . . . our trip INCLUDES emergency insurance. We are also Certified Wilderness First Responders.
Plain and simple, safety is our primary goal. We will have an experienced guide and porters, and we will be along the entire way.How much does this cost?
Everest Base Camp Trip $3750 - 17 Days, land only (airfare not included)
For this trip we don’t offer single occupancy and we match you with a roommate if you don't have one.We might be able to organize a group airfare from Los Angeles (LAX):**
