What we’re about
Discover the centuries old and traditional Japanese Martial Art. Our small dojo offers a holistic approach to self defense, physical fitness, and personal growth. This is not a usual dojo and there is intense and personal attention to the individual growth and human potential (not just in martial arts, but in life), functionality in multiple environments, and relationship with nature, including developing harmony and balance in relationship with others. We train outdoors with the natural elements. The emphasis on resilience and adaptability in this dojo is testament to the fact that many students have historically joined the dojo during challenging times in their lives and transformed into physically and mentally stronger, compassionate, resilient, and adaptable beings.
At MVAK, you will develop:
Self-defense skills
Physical strength and agility
Mental focus and resilience
Respect for oneself and others
Balance in life
Connection to rich cultural heritage

"As in dojo, so in life. The learnings go much beyond martial applications and carry over to daily life, should one choose so. There is a big focus on personal development mentally, psychologically and spiritually."
"This class is a gift but it is also a serious commitment. If you are looking for something basic and typical and a chance to get a belt, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a real opportunity to grow and develop through this art, you have found what you are looking for."
"I have been training w/Sensei Lunia for many, many years. He is a true polymath, a master of his craft, & a genuinely good & open-minded teacher. He is truly a martial artist's martial artist."
"It is hard to overstate what Mahipal (Sensei Lunia) is doing at this school, and the impact on his students is always literally and without exaggeration, life changing."
"The information I have synthesized has provided me with the understanding needed to live in harmony with nature. My journey, artfully, and beautifully guided by our Sensei, has led me to embrace a feeling of unity with nature and oneness at every currently observable level in my life."
"Overall, so much amazing knowledge is available at your disposal, and it's a matter of asking for it and choosing one's own path. I think there is something here for everyone who is truly seeking."
"The training is much more comprehensive and draws upon ancient techniques from the Japanese Arts practiced by the Samurai. While the physical side is a key part of the training, the practice very much involves the complete mind-body-spirit."
