Winter is a magical season in Yellowstone, when visitors are few and wildlife viewing is outstanding. In the chilled air, see bubbling mud pots and gushing geysers eerily veiled in steam.

World famous Yellowstone is one of the most exciting places in the world to photograph landscapes and wildlife. This is a must see on any nature photographer's and wildlife lover's list. Join us as we explore this winter wonderland and the surrounding areas. Discover the phenomenal photography opportunities of Yellowstone’s quiet season. Explore the park by snowcoach deep into the wilds of Yellowstone.

We will photograph the dramatic waterfalls, geyser eruptions, thermal pools and steaming fumaroles. The icy Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and the snow covered thermal basins are a site you will never forget.

Yellowstone is one of the premiere wildlife viewing areas in the US. Wildlife is everywhere and people are few and far between. Wildlife stands out against the wintry background. Heavy snow in the higher mountain force wildlife to come to the low valleys, rivers, and geyser basins. We will photograph herds of bison walking through the snow. Numerous big game species are in this area. We will look for buffalo, elk, coyotes, moose, wolves, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and bald eagles. We will visit a section of the park along a river where Bobcats are commonly photographed. The mammals will have their prime winter fur. Bird sightings can be very exciting, as we will look for trumpeter swans, bald eagles, and great grey owls or whatever else we discover. We will visit Lamar valley the premiere wolf wildlife location.

John Slonina is a professional nature photograph who has photographed in Yellowstone for over 20 years. He is an authorized permittee of the national park. His experience brings in-depth knowledge of the area and its resident wildlife.

Itinerary:
Each day we maximize the best opportunities at the best time of day.

Logistics: We will cover the best part of the park from the same hotel. We access the best locations by snowcoach and also by private van.
We don't need to waste a day driving from West Yellowstone to Gardiner. We use the best most modern snowcoaches which are also faster and cover more territory in a shorter amount of time.

Group Size:
We have a small group size which is substantially smaller than other tour companies. This will maximize learning and allow us to get closer to wildlife. I want to make sure you get the best shots while we are on location. We also want to give you a lot of space in the snow coach.

We will be traveling in one private vehicle. We use both a van and snowcoach designed for wildlife viewing and photography. We can access more remote areas and respond quicker to wildlife.

Skill and Fitness Level:
Anyone with an interest in nature photography from beginner to professional photographer. The participants should have a love of nature and enjoy the company of other people in a small group setting.

Result:
We will help you create beautiful images and have fun but also teach skills and techniques you can use to take your photography to the next, higher level! When the weekend is over, attendees will have a solid understanding of nature photography and your camera.

Each day we will visit some of the best spots in the state. Each area is handpicked to provide the best photographic opportunities.

Since we will be shooting a high volume of pictures. Please bring lots of memory cards We also recommend you bring a portable external hard drive to back up your images. Florida is famous for tame birds that will stand just a few feet in front of you.

The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, has mystified people down through the ages, scientists, poets, and lay persons alike. Written records of so-called "Great Auroral Displays" date back more than two thousand years. The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights are one of the most spectacular natural displays on the planet.

Try to imagine the most colorful, textured sunset you've ever seen, then send it swirling and pulsing across an otherwise clear and starry sky. Maybe add some faint outlines of mountains on the horizon and a hooting owl or a howling wolf for ambiance.

Greater Fairbanks is one of the best places on earth for experiencing the beautiful and mysterious northern lights. Bright, energetic curtains of yellow, green, red or even purple light brighten our night skies regularly. Fairbanks is situated within a ring-shaped region around the North Pole called the Aurora Oval. This location provides a terrific balance of occurrence, frequency and activity. Plus, our continental climate offers many more clearer nights than you would find in a coastal area.

This is predicted to be a peak time for aurora activity. These magical lights are just one of the many things we have planned on this trip. This trip is scheduled to coincide with the new moon. This is one of the darkest nights of the month. The will enhance the strength of the aurora which makes for some breathtaking images. While no one can ever say with certainty exactly when and where the aurora borealis display might occur, we are in one of the best spots in the world at one of the best time of year.

Fairbanks has been an aurora destination for decades,” said Luke Hopkins, Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor, “With a high degree of successful sightings, visitors from all over the world come to Fairbanks each year to see spectacular northern lights displays. Our clear, dark nights and global position under the ‘Auroral Oval’ make this one of the best places on earth to see the aurora borealis.”

We will drive to different locations to view the northern lights outside of the city lights. It is also very nice to have many different backgrounds to add variety to your pictures.

Why March?:
March and September is when the northern lights are most active. This is when the Earth's Atmosphere is at its weakest. September is the cloudiest month of the year. March has the clearest nights of the year. That is why we have had the northern lights multiple nights and never stuck out. This is unlike other parts of the world. It is also a great time of year. It is incredible to see the aurora and enjoy this winter wonderland.

The northern lights are the focus but we have other subjects we plan on photographing. We will be photographing several beautiful Alaskan Landscapes. We will also keep a look out to photograph local wildlife.

Our schedule will be determined by the aurora borealis and the weather. We will shoot sunset followed by dinner then wait to see what happens. We will have the latest forecasts and predictions, but it is honestly a wait and see approach. We will be flexible and ready to go.

We will both be doing some presentations on photography. Photography of the Night Sky will be the first lecture, using wide field camera lenses to capture constellations and the Milky Way, using just a Camera & tripod! We will discuss more advanced portable tracking options as well. We also will be doing presentations on outdoor landscape and wildlife photography.

We also will travel 60 miles to the acclaimed Chena Hot Springs Resort. Chena Hot Springs is world renowned for being one of the best places on Earth to see the northern lights. The resort is located under one of the most active regions of magnetic fields producing aurora borealis. It is away from the light pollution of city lights, and the skies over Chena are clear more often than those over Fairbanks. We will be there near the vernal equinox when auroras are typically the strongest, as well as during the new moon when the night sky is also the darkest!

The resort has a large heated mineral indoor pool, the outdoor rock lake and numerous hot tubs provide a great opportunity to soak, swim or rejuvenate until the Northern Lights are appearing in the evening. Included is the visit of the famous Aurora Ice Museum and Stoli Ice Bar. You may even see the northern lights just outside the door of your room.

Snow Coach: we will take a snow coach to 30 minutes to the top of a mountain where no city lights interfere the aurora. The compositions are incredible with the Aurora and mountains in the background. After arriving on top, you can step inside the heated Mongolian Yurt to warm up and enjoy a hot beverage. For the next few hours enjoy spectacular 360-degree Aurora displays. Return to the resort at around 3 AM or later if the lights are active.

World Ice Championship: Fairbanks is home to one of the largest ice sculpting competitions and exhibitions on earth featuring more that 70 teams from around the world. 45,000 visitors come to the park to see these intricately carved masterpieces.

What's included: Hotel, Snow Coach Rides to top of mountain, Tour of ice museum, World Ice Championship Admission. Transportation (no need to rent a car) and photo instruction.
