Join us at Cape Disappointment State Park in Ilwaco, Washington for some magnificent ocean swells against the backdrop of the cliffs and lighthouse on the first day of King Tides this season. The waves tend to be highest for the two hours before high tide (which is at 11:30 a.m. this day), so plan to arrive anytime between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. to stake out your spot with lots of other friendly photogs.

You'll probably want your tripod for this trip and a spare battery or two. This photo was taken at 134mmm with my 24-240mm zoom, to give you some idea about what lenses you might want to bring. You may want a polarizing filter to reduce glare. If it's sunny (we wish!) you may want a neutral density filter to use a slow shutter speed to smooth out the water.

This state park covers a large area. We will meet at Waikiki Beach in Cape Disappointment State Park in Ilwaco Washington. The address is 244 Robert Gray Drive SW, Ilwaco, WA 98624. When I put Waikiki Beach into Apple maps, it takes me right there. There is a medium-sized parking lot along the water. If that is full, there is a larger one back down the road where the restrooms are. You must have a Washington Discover Pass on your windshield, which you can buy at the park, REI, etc. The rangers do check and ticket for the pass and any illegally parked cars. It takes approximately 2.5 hours to drive there from the Portland area.

It's always windy, cold and "wettish" when I've been there for King Tides. I usually end up climbing over some logs to get to a good spot so sturdy shoes are a good idea. Dress in layers and don't forget your camera's raincoat!
