What are the implications of embracing a Humanist philosophy or lifestance in this ever changing and challenging world? How can Humanism inform our choices and guide our interactions with others? These are some of the questions we're discussing in our online group called “[Exploring Humanism](https://njhn.org/exploring-humanism/).”

We’re exploring the [Ten Commitments](https://thehumanist.com/magazine/september-october-2019/features/living-humanist-values-the-ten-commitments), a set of Humanist values and principles that promote a democratic world in which every individual’s worth and dignity is respected, nurtured, and supported, and where human freedom and ethical responsibility are natural aspirations for everyone. These Humanist values include: critical thinking, ethical development, peace and social justice, service and participation, altruism, humility, environmentalism, global awareness, responsibility, and empathy.

The Ten Commitments have been developed by the [American Humanist Association Center for Education](https://americanhumanistcenterforeducation.org/ten-commitments/) to assist us with putting our values into action to work towards positively impacting our communities and society.

This month we'll be discussing: **RESPONSIBILITY**
**“I will be a good person—even when no one is looking—and own the consequences of my actions.”**

Every day, each of us makes choices. These choices, large and small, all have consequences—for ourselves and for the world around us. Moral responsibility involves taking conscious ownership of one’s intentions and actions, and being accountable for the resulting consequences. Although we all live in a society with various cultural values, expectations, codes of conduct, and social mores, ultimately we all decide for ourselves what is right and wrong. Being a responsible person involves steadfast attention to what is right and willfully bearing the blame or praise for our own actions.

Our discussion leader will offer a short presentation on this Commitment prior to our discussion. This will be our last discussion on the Ten Commitments. We'll have a new program starting in 2025. [Check our website](https://njhn.org/exploring-humanism/) for details coming soon.
