Full Hike Schedule & Chapter Newsletter
Details
Our complete seasonal hike schedule & newsletter are available on our website at adknjr.org (http://www.adknjr.org/) If there's a hike you'd like to join that's not posted on our Meetup site, you can register directly with the hike leader using the contact information provided in the hike schedule. Check our newsletter to catch up on Chapter events and happenings, including our wonderful fall outing, our annual winter holiday party, Chapter meetings, volunteer opportunities, and more.
Non-members are welcome on two hikes after which membership with the North Jersey Ramapo Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (https://www.adk.org/membership/join/) is required. Membership comes with a variety of benefits including a 10% discount at Ramsey Outdoor; our annual holiday party and social; special events such as our traditional day-outing in the Fall; a subscription to ADK’s bi-monthly magazine, Adirondac; and the opportunity to contribute to the preservation and extension of hiking lands and viewsheds in our region.
New hikers are strongly encouraged to select hikes appropriate to their capabilities. North Jersey Ramapo Chapter hikes are rated for pace (A, B or C), mileage, and terrain (A, B or C), with "C" designating easier hikes and "A" more challenging ones. We recommend that new hikers should first try a "C" or short "B" hike before undertaking a more difficult one; otherwise, you may not fully enjoy the hiking experience. If you have any doubts, please contact the hike leader in advance.
Pace Ratings:
A = Fast - 2.5 mph or faster
B = Moderate - about 2 mph
C = Easy - 1.5 mph or less
Distance: Noted in miles
Terrain Ratings:
A = Strenuous, long/steep climbs and descents,
possible rock scrambling
B = Moderate climbs and descents
C = Generally flat with little elevation change
For example, a hike rated “B-7-A” is a moderately paced hike of approximately 7 miles with steep climbs and/or descents and possible rock scrambling.
If you join us for a hike, please understand that you are responsible for your own preparedness, including ensuring that the hike is appropriate for your level of fitness, that you wear the proper clothing, and bring the proper gear, food and water (see the ADK's recommended Hiking Essentials (https://www.adk.org/play/hiking-information/hiking-essentials/) and guidelines, below).
Smoking and drinking of alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited.
Leaders have the right, responsibility and sole discretion to refuse any hiker he/she deems to be not properly attired, prepared, or otherwise fit to safely complete the hike.
HIKERS' GUIDELINES:
Risks: As with all physical activities, hiking involves hazards. Persons participate at their own risk and will be asked to sign a statement acknowledging that fact before starting the hike. Prior to the hike please advise the leader of any medical condition or physical impairment that could affect you during the hike.
Footwear and Clothing: Wear clothing suited to the weather and carry extra garments for unexpected weather conditions. Dress in thin layers so that you can adjust the number of layers as required to maintain comfort. In winter carry a wool cap and wool or polypropylene gloves or mitts and a windproof shell. Be prepared for rain. Bring a rain jacket and rain pants, preferably of the type that permits venting body moisture. Wear comfortable, sturdy boots/shoes. Do not wear cotton garments in winter.
Drink and Food: Adequate hydration is important year round. Drink frequently during the hike. Carry food to enjoy during the midday lunch stop.
Other responsibilities: Hikers with children under 16 and new hikers are required to contact the hike leader in advance to determine if the hike is suitable for them. Minors under 16 are welcome on day hikes when accompanied by a parent or guardian. No person under 18 shall participate in overnight outings unless accompanied by a parent or adult sponsor over 21. The hike leader may refuse to allow a person to hike who is judged to be poorly equipped or unable to do the published hike. Participants should get to the hike at least 10 minutes prior to the starting time.
Maps: The TC number indicates a NY-NJ Trail Conference map for the area of the hike. For example: TC-118 refers to the Southern Harriman Park map.
Abbreviations: NCA-No Calls After . . . , Pref.- Leader’s contact preference.
Expense Sharing: When car-pooling, passengers are expected to offer the driver funds sufficient to cover the cost of fuel, tolls and parking fees. A $3.00 minimum per person is recommended. Most hike trailhead meeting locations can be found on NY-NJ Trail Conference maps.
Dog-Friendly Hikes: Pets are not permitted on hikes unless the hike description clearly states that it is "dog friendly." If it is, all hikers with dogs must abide by park leash regulations.
Every 2 weeks on Tuesday
