It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how. In a world where people have what they want, does having more matter?

ALN Monthly Book Club: A Psalm for the Wild-Built (Online)

The venue is Brewskis bar and arcade in Miramar. They have a huge outdoor patio with plenty of seating (see attached pic) and we will have a section reserved for us. This place is open until 2AM so you can stay as long as you want.

I will be bringing a bunch of games including dominion, codenames, wingspan, cards against humanity, and smallworld. If anyone has any other board/card games that they want to play or introduce to everyone else, please bring them. Board game nights are dependent on people bringing their games. We typically have a huge selection, but bring them anyway.

We are pretty good at teaching people how to play games. If you've never played a game before, don't feel shy to jump in and learn. We are more than willing to explain the games to you. Learning how to play new games is what board game night is all about.

In near-future Britain, a narrator known as “the bridge” is hired by a newly founded ministry devoted to experimenting with time-travel. She is assigned to be a monitor and guide for Commander Graham Gore, one of five “expats” who have been pulled from the past to the present. Gore, a nineteenth-century naval officer plucked from the throes of the doomed Franklin Expedition, lives with the bridge in London and participates with the other expats in exercises that are intended to acclimate them to the present, while being monitored for signs of physical, mental, or dimensional deterioration. But as the bridge grows closer to Gore, it gradually becomes clear that all is not what it seems, and the government can’t (and won’t) be willing to protect everyone.

ALN Monthly Book Club: The Ministry of Time, A Novel (Online)

For our January Monthly Book Club, we will be reading Kyle Chayka's "Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened the World!"

We will be hosting this event IN PERSON, outdoors, at Presidio Park in Old Town! Attendees must be vaccinated; vaccination cards WILL be checked. In addition, we recommend (but do not require) that attendees wear masks and maintain social distance.

We typically meet at the picnic tables in the shade at the end of the loop made by Cosoy Way. Please see the embedded map below for more details.
